Bottom Line: Go where the fans are… not the musicians
What does that mean?
Don’t think that putting your music on platforms such as Soundcloud and Reverbnation will result in music sales and fanbase building.
Don’t get me wrong, these platforms are fantastic things and they offer opportunities for exposure in the wider media so they should certainly not be ignored. However, if you’re thinking that posting your songs on them and getting to the top of their charts is going to create a decent fanbase, or even if you intend to use follow/unfollow strategies to build followers you’ll likely be disappointed in the end result.
The reason for this is that a high percentage of the active people on those platforms are musicians looking to promote their music… not every day fans looking for more music. So, even though you can certainly build a large following using follow/unfollow tactics on those platforms, it won’t be the kind of following you want.
So where should you build your audience?
STEEMIT!!! +Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, Vine, Tumblr, Flickr, Vimeo and Pinterest.
Why those?
- All of them allow video and sound in some form (on Pinterest you can pin YouTube videos).
- All these platforms (except Steemit + Facebook) allow follow/unfollow activities which work really well for audience building when done right. Obviously, if not done right they can lead to a number of problems… but that (as well as how to promote on Steemit + Facebook) are separate tips altogether :-)
