I am trying to learn about blockchain. I´ve seen a couple of interesting videos, and little by little I gain some understanding.

2 questions I will try and dig about. I post them as a reminder for myself, and just in case I recieve any comments or guidance.
Blockchain is just the concept, and thus can be applied in different platforms or languages (Java, linux, C)? Is there a dominant platform, at least? In which platform is Steem based? What about Bitcoin?
Besides the cryptocurrencies: are there any other current applications of blockchain as a technology? The first example I think of is accounting packages (more so, since we are talking about ledgers). Would it make sense to develop an accounting package based on blockchain? Another thing that comes to mind is the game of life. Does a blockchain implementation of this concept make sense? (I do a lot of accounting and a lot of physics, hence the examples :-) )
