The Chaos Legion is here!
but you already know that.
I managed to flip my PLOTs back and forth. Then I sold my VOUCHERs while they were $20+ to buy back more later for a cheaper price. All in all and with the help of the generous SPS airdrops I managed to buy 100 packs during the first presale phase without actually spending any money.
Since this morning we're finally able to open those packs and play with the new cards. Amaze-balls. That's actually quite exciting. The game's meta will change a lot and we can finally get creative again with the team selection process. I haven't had much time to playtest the new cards yet, but I did open some packs first thing this morning after breakfast...
Estimating the Costs
Well, I already alluded to how it was basically free, but I could have just kept the profits from PLOT-flipping and continued selling my VOUCHERs instead of buying back in, so there was a "cost" attached to it all. Each pack was $4 and for the VOUCHERs I think we can go for a $16 evaluation during the 1st presale phase leaving us with a combined purchase value of 20$ each. Now I did get a 10% bonus for buying 100 so that's 110 packs for $2000.
Total invested: $2000 for 110 packs @ ~$18.20 per pack
Opening 52 Boosters
Why 52? That's just how many potions I had on my account to fully boost legendary and gold-foil drop chances. I didn't originally intend to open so many packs right away but I guess I got carried away a little bit. It's actually quite fun to open these things!
Pack Contents:
- Summoners: 7
- Legendaries: 5
- Epics: 13
- GoldFoil: 7 (6 Commons, 1 Rare)
- Commons & Rares: 228
I would have hoped for more summoners but I am quite stoked with 5 Legendaries, that's almost one Legendary per 10 packs opened. I think I was quite lucky with those packs.
Was it all Worth It?
Hell yeah! I mean, it was all "basically free" anyway, but doing the actual math probably doesn't look as convincing as one might have hoped.
The cards from the pack openings can be estimated to be worth around $600 right now, so that's roughly $11.50 of card value per pack opened for me. That's a little above, but surprisingly close, to the current aftermarket price for a pack on hive-engine.
Since each pack came at a virtual cost of $18.20, this sounds a bit disappointing, but the presale packs had their promo airdrop priced in also. I was quite lucky with those, too. I was guaranteed at least 2 Dr. Blight for my 100 packs purchased but I actually received four of them, worth at least $150 each right now.

Value Held:
Cards from Packs: ~ $600
Promo Cards: ~$600
Additional Packs: ~ $600
Total return: $1800 from 110 packs @ ~ $16.40 per pack
By these rough calculations on day one, it was just about ok to buy into Chaos Legion at a small but hopefully temporary loss. I do expect the regular cards to go down in price as millions more of these packs get opened, but the Promo Cards should really be well worth it in the long run.
Buy More?
I'm not sure yet. To get playable Chaos Legion cards for Silver to Gold League battles I'd probably need to buy hundreds more. That's not really in my "basically free" budget. I am considering to sell the remaining packs via hive-engine just to have liquidity to buy more packs with the new VOUCHERs being dropped. Then again it might make more sense to sell the VOUCHERs, too and just get some more packs in the general sale or simply buy the cards I need straight away.
I'll have to think about it for a couple of days and see how bad the FOMO gets.
