The focus of this post is on the Commons and Rares from the Chaos Legion’s edition simply because they represent the cheapest way of rebuilding your starter deck for the coming Reward System Revamp. As many probably know by now, cards ownership will soon be necessary for earning in this game.
Late March 2022, after @yabapmatt announced that ghost cards wouldn’t provide any DEC earnings in the near future, I went on a small buying spree to complete my collection of Chaos Legion’s starters. Having only opened three packs since its launch, I still had a few missing pieces that I thought would be now nice to own.
I am not sure how much the whole set of Commons and Rares cost me as I already had a few of them, either a Regular Foil or a Gold Foil copy. Today, I just wanted to give an overall dollar amount to players who might decide to do the same. At the time I took the screenshots, the quick and short answer is less than $8.50.
This, however, comes with several asterisks:
- First, this budget does not include any of the Summoners or Untamed cards.
- Then, you might want to skip on a few Chaos Legion monsters that you barely use anyway.
- Finally, there might be cards that you would rather rent.
Chaos Legion
A total of 52 cards: 29 Commons & 23 Rares
Commons
Less expensive: Scavo Chemist | $0.053
Most expensive: Deeplurker | $0.457
Rares
Less expensive: Portal Spinner | $0.104
Most expensive: Cursed Windeku | $0.731
The Summoners
Once you play in leagues higher than Bronze, you realize that you might need to rely on leveled-up Summoners to advance. Therefore, purchasing one copy of every Summoner might just not be sufficient, no to mention that this would also mean doubling the given budget of $8.50 at the very least.
In my case, I am renting Gold Foil copies of each of the Chaos Legion’s Summoners, essentially for three reasons.
To begin with, (1) leveling up all the Summoners doesn’t quite make sense financially for me regarding my situation in the game. That being said, Gold Foils allow me to play with (2) a few leveled-up monsters that can sometimes give me an edge while (3) providing me with the extra 10% DEC bonus after each battle.
The Untamed Edition
A total of 42 cards: 24 Commons & 18 Rares
At present, most of the Commons and Rares from the Untamed’s edition are going for a rental cost of only 0.1 DEC per day. This is because there is currently no need of renting these base-level cards, which are already available in the starter deck anyway. This will most probably not last for long.
Personally, I wouldn’t count on those rental prices to stay that low once the new reward system comes out.
For this reason, I’ve started to look for lenders that hopefully won’t cancel on me. To do so, I was willing to pay the rent of a few monsters from the Untamed set for a season or two prior to the update. However, nothing is guaranteed. So, we will see if a few cards will still be around once I’ll need them.
In a nutshell
In the end, it will come down to making choices.
Most of us have not access to an unlimited budget that can be spent on cards, which in a way makes this game interesting. We build the deck we can afford while trying to push up our win rate.
Overall, I believe that we can almost all agree that incentivizing cards ownership will be healthy for the game’s economy. And therefore, for all of us.
