Every Single Mana Cost on Basic Stats
This week’s Share Your Battle challenge brings to light Kulu Swimhunter, which has the distinctive characteristic of precisely having no defining feature. By this, I mean that from its base-level to its max-level, this monster doesn’t acquire any special ability.
Surprisingly, Kulu Swimhunter is not completely alone in this category as the Water Chaos Legion’s set launched four cards with no abilities at any level, which means that their mana cost was entirely allocated to the basic Attack, Speed, and Defense stats.
At base-level:

At max-level:

Consequently, they are great cards when it comes to Back-to-Basics battles because their mana cost is not wasted on unusable features.
Kulu Swimhunter, also available for Little Leagues
To complete this week’s challenge, I’ve decided to try out a small-ball lineup featuring Kulu Swimhunter. In fact, its 4 mana cost makes it available for Little League matches.
My lineup:

With the recent increase of the average mana cap per battle, I found it harder and harder to free a spot for those low mana cost monsters offering no abilities.
However, it is important to note that I play with a base-level Kulu Swimhunter. A max-level copy offers 4 attacks for only 4 mana, which might make it an interesting choice in the highest leagues.
In the following battle, I’ve decided to place the Xenith Monk in the front. With its Heal ability unlocked at level 2, I was hoping to buy some time for the entire team.
At first glance, my first mistake seemed to be the choice of my summoner. To counter the old-school Alric magic spam, I should have gone with Bortus and its -1 magic debuff.

The problem is that I don’t own a leveled-up Bortus, which means that Zenith Monk would have been unable to use its Heal.
Then, by trying to cram into my team Kulu Swimhunter, I had only 2 more mana left. For many players, I believe, those 2 mana are usually filled with Ice Pixie when it comes to the Water splinter.
Finally, in Gold III and above, inflicting only 4 damage per round in those situations turns out to be too little to wipe out the opposition. Overall, these cards were all great on their own but there was no synergy in the team I’ve put in place.
In short, I deserved to lose.
