It’s hard not to utter those famous words as you walk into Chavez Ravine. If you’re like me, it’s not even in your own voice but the majestic voice of longtime Dodger’s announcer Vin Scully. I love going to see a game at the third oldest stadium in the majors. As the game got started, I got myself a Dodger dog and a Hite.
The Arizona Diamondbacks head into Dodger Stadium to put a seriously hurting on the Dodgers playoff hopes. The D-backs own the best record in the National League at 23-11 and own an 8 game lead over the reigning 5 time NL West champs, the 15-19 Dodgers. The Diamondbacks are 10-0-1 in season series and haven’t lost a series all year.
The pitching matchup between D-backs Zack Godley and Dodgers Rich Hill looked like a mismatch on paper and that’s how it played out in the first couple innings as Rich Hill as his 6.00 ERA gave up two 2 run shots and a solo home run in the first three innings. Hill gave up 5 runs in 4 innings to raise his ERA to an unsightly 7.11.
The Dodgers did their best to keep pace scoring a run in the first, third and two in the fifth inning to get within a game. There was also a tense moment in the top of the fifth when D-back outfielder Steve Souza Jr. slid hard into 3rdbase taking out Max Muncy. Players had to be restrained as Muncy stayed down and Souza was guided back to the dugout. Souza Jr. was called out on the play and there were no ejections.
Matt Kemp, the former Dodger MVP, sparked a rally in the bottom of the fifth plating two runs with a single to make in 5-4. He has been on fire recently as he has hits in seven straight games and 3 hits in each of his last three games.
In the ninth, down 5-4, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts sent pinch hitter Kiki Hernandez to the plate. Hernandez responded by blasting a solo shot to right center to tie the game at 5. Alas, after having runners on second and third in both the 10thand 11thinnings the Dodgers couldn’t score and in the top of the 12th, Daniel Descalso hit a pinch hit 3 run shot to break the game open. The Diamondbacks went on to win it 8-5, sending the Dodgers to a third straight loss.
