Until just a month ago, Ryu was the front-runner in the National League Cy Young Award race. The gap between the runner-up and the runner-up was wide. Although he had a small number of strikeouts, he was on a roll with the league's only one-run ERA. But his ERA soared with seven runs in 41⁄3 innings against the New York Yankees on Aug. 24 and seven runs in 42⁄3 innings against Arizona on Aug. 30.
The media responded immediately. The official Major League Baseball website(MLB.com) conducted a mock vote of 42 reporters in the two major leagues on Thursday. Ryu has been No. 1 four times in the last five surveys, but he fell to No. 3 in the latest polls without getting a single first-place vote.
"I had seven scoreless innings against the Mets on Saturday (May 15) and ended my hard times," MLB.com said. He had a 9.95 ERA in the previous four games," he said, regretting his four-game slump. MLB.com highlighted that Ryu had a solid season overall, and that he had 22 earned runs or less in 27 starts, but it was only after the voters left their minds.
Max Schwarzer (Washington), who won 23 first place votes, and Jacob Digrom (New York Mets) who won 19 second place. The two players turned out to be neck-and-neck within the margin of error.
Overall, however, it is said that Digrom stands at the forefront of the Cy Young Award race. Schwarzer was on the disabled list twice and lost in innings and strikeouts. On the contrary, Schwarzer has the possibility that the actual results of the vote may fall compared to that of Ryu. Except for leading in strikeouts, there is nothing particularly better than Ryu in the rest of the field. It will also refer to the WAR (Winning Contributions) compared to substitute players, but it is difficult to ignore the overall classical music record.
It is seen that Ryu will be more difficult to overtake as long as Digrom does not collapse in the remaining appearances. However, just second place can be a historic season. Only two Asian athletes have finished second in the Cy Young voting, including Wang Jianming in 2006 and Yu Darvish in 2013. The South Korean player has yet to make it to TOP 10 in a Cy Young Award vote.
If Ryu maintains the remaining two games without any difficulty, he will be able to earn a considerable number of second place votes in the Cy Young voting. If Digrom collapses, there is a good chance that Ryu will win the historic No. 1 ticket Unfortunately, it is still a great season.
