Marketers will tell you that word of mouth is the best advertising there is.
All the paid ads in the world do not come close to having the power of one person telling another when the first has the respect from the later. This is why, in sales, referrals, are so important. One has instant credibility when one is referred by someone that is respected.
STEEM's biggest problem is a lack of recognition. To me, I do not consider this a problem at this moment since we are awaiting a few developments. Personally, I would be just as happy to fly under the radar until SMTs and Communities is released.
At present, there are a few marketing campaigns going by some members on here. They appear to be having success on both YouTube and Facebook. I can only presume the fact these two entities are on a censorship rampage makes it easy pickings. Nonetheless, we are seeing great results, especially on D.Tube.
We are also getting a nice influx of organic traffic. According the the Alexa rankings, Google is providing a nice amount of traffic on a daily basis. Ranking in the search engines is crucial. STEEM is helped by the fact there are so many dynamic websites on this blockchain, most which are trending upwards in the rankings. If this continues, STEEM will not be a secret for too long.
That said, how would you like to have an inside track to a group of younger people who are very into social media? Would it also be helpful if these people were known persons? I think the answer is yes to both questions.
STEEM might just received a huge breakthrough. Everything can be looked at as speculative, yet there appears to be an entryway into the NFL. This is something that could be an stepping stone to much greater traffic on this site.
Athletes love social media. It is a way for these young men (and women) to keep in touch with fans. It is rare these days to see one who is not engage in the platform, usually many times a day. This really helps those sites since these individuals tend to have a ton of followers.
Today, to the best of my knowledge, we had the first NFL player join Steemit.
His name is Udochukwu Victor Ochi and he plays defensive end for the Tennessee Titans. After being signed as an undrafted free agent, he suffered getting cut by a few teams before enduring an ACL injury last year.

Obviously Vic is not a household name. He is quickly becoming a journeyman player. The path to the NFL is not always an easy one. I do not know the current pay scale for players who end up on the practice squad but I am certain he is not making Tom Brady money. Thus, he might be the ideal guy to bring STEEM to the NFL.
To start, making a few bucks blogging could help him out. And then this is from his intro post....
I will document and share my wins, loses, blood, sweat and tears on my road back to the NFL! At the same time I want to bring awareness and support to the STEEM community as the community ambassador to the NFL. I hope you enjoy!

Touchdown!!! (Sorry couldnt help myself).
Basically, he wants to help bring awareness of STEEM to the NFL. What better way to access those individuals than via someone who is in the locker room? This could be worth more than 10K ads on Facebook depending upon who he tells.
It is one of those situations where you never know who will end up linked to this blockchain.
Personally, I look forward to the day that Stephen A Smith references an Odell Beckham Jr sex tape on D.Tube.
Only then will we know we have made it.
