I am sure many of us are suddenly surprised over the increasing number of people , who kill themselves given to their depressional mood.
A few days back, I found a post where about 7 persons were said to have committed suicide within 72 hours and majority of the comments were that of blaming them for ever taking such an action ! The truth is that many more persons are committing suicide daily but are not being reported !
Depression is real . It is a common and medical illness that negatively affects how one feels , the way he or she thinks and how the person act . Depression is a mood disorder characterised by low mood , a feeling of sadness and maybe a general loss of interest in things .
So depression can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems.
Medically , depression can be treated but how many of the depressed people will go public by announcing that they are depressed ? Many times , depression can lead to loss of appetite, weight loss , weight gain , a feeling of hopelessness , chronic pain that do not respond to treatment , empty mood , social withdrawal etc.
We live in a society where many of us are too busy to be interested in the lives of the people around us. Many times in the small estate which we live , we do not even know the names of the occupants of the flats around us and how will we then interact with them to know their problems ? In the churches we attend , we become so preoccupied to know the names of many other worshippers ; how then will we be able to help them, if they are depressed ?
More often than not, depression sets in because people have a problem and no one is either listening to them or giving them assistance ! It becomes worst for them , if they had so believed in you to assist them and instead of assisting them, you are castigating them ! At that point , life becomes unbearable and depression sets in.
About a year ago, we were driving with a friend along a street in Uyo and suddenly , there was this man who was crossing the road but very sluggishly . Saw him ahead of time and we took time to horn yet the man obviously did not hear ! When the brakes were held and the car screeched almost on him, he suddenly then realised that he was in danger , he crossed the road , sat down on the ground and began to cry profusely. Every person came down heavily on him with abusive words , including my friend but I did not - rather , I went out to speak with him. Here was a man , whose child was sick and needed some money for treatment in a Patent Medicine Store , he had no job and I guess the wife too , had no job ! He needed about 3 - 5k and there was this man who promised helping him but for three days now , he has been going to the man's house and the man keeps posting him. The child's health was detoriating ! My friend , who initially was very angry with him , started crying . We carried him , took him first to Uyo Sports Club , bought him food but he just could not eat ! At the end of the day , we raised some money for him and you can imagine a very big man going on his knees to thank us , shedding the tears of joy and disbelieve that people he never knew , could bail him out. We even advised that he should take the child to a Hospital not a Patent Medicine Store !
Now think of the many other people who have one challenge or the other and no one is there for them. Think of that person who only needs a call to soothe his or her emotions and no one calls ! Think of those going through some emotional challenges and instead of supporting them , we make them the subject of our discourse in our sit outs and those gossips gets back to them . Think about what many of us do, celebrate people in the front and destroy them in the back , many times, these are people who have been there for us ! These can lead to a depressed life .
The obvious truth is that many who take the option of suicide to end a depressed life , just believe it's the best solution to it . Castigating them in death won't bring them back , neither will they hear or read all you have said about them but let's ARISE and help others from towing such path.
Our Churches should do more by preaching the WORD and letting the WORD find expression in our lives . We should be more concerned about others and how they are faring ! Whenever someone needs your attention , please try and be there for the person - as you never can tell ! Let's Inspire people around us with our Words , Actions and Life. Being there for people is beyond giving them money but try to help, whenever the need arises ; even though many of those we help also think it was their right ! So don't be weary in doing good .
Not only will we enjoy the blessing of GOD , we will also help in reducing the number of persons committing suicide in our World.
