…..but he (Joseph) refused to have sexual relations with her or even spend time her. Genesis 39:10(New Century Version)
I have often heard people say things like “I cannot sin” or “I cannot fall into temptation”, and I think so myself , will they say the same things when the temptation eventually comes? I think what is more important is to prepare ourselves ahead of temptation by setting healthy boundaries around our lives. This might sound like an irony, but for me, the reason why I know I cannot fall is because I know I can fall. The bible warns:
so be careful. If you are thinking, “oh, I would never behave like that” let this be a warning to you. For you too may fall into sin. 1 Corinthians 10:12(The Living Bible)
The reason why we need to set boundaries in our lives is because we know that we have the tendency to fall. Save yourself the embarrassment by claiming that you cannot fall, and use that energy instead to create healthy boundaries. It is prideful for anyone to think that he is above temptations.
Temptations are no respecter of persons; you only win when you are equipped ahead of time. The wise man sounded in proverbs 16:18 that pride goes before destruction, a haughty Spirit before a fall.
Setting healthy boundaries for your life also involves you becoming very honest with yourself. There are certain places or situations that can bring about the downfall of one person and while another may be in the circumstance but will still be standing strong, so it is critical that we create structures with the help of the Holy Spirit to prevent us from falling into temptations. We should never use someone else’s standard to compare and measure our own lives; set your own boundaries. Never use formulas. If at all, the only formula you should employ is your personal relationship with the Holy Spirit.
“The heart is the most deceitful thing there is and desperately wicked. No one can really know how bad it is! Jeremiah 17:9 (The living Bible)”
The human mind can devise unimaginable evil, it is only a heart that is regenerated, and fully yielded to God that can easily shun evil.
