How We Foster Growth by Focusing on Retaining New Members

I would like to see a discussion on what some of the members in attendance are doing to help retain new members and minnows. I understand whales spend time voting great content, leaders direct them to communities such as MSP, and some witnesses create tools or spend money promoting Steemit through facebook and youtube ads.

This is all great, but hoping to hear some out of the box ideas that smaller communities can start to implement? How can we help get new users into communities where their content is seen and the posts receive views and interactions until improvements are made via Steemit.

It's great all the new accounts that are created on a daily basis, but what percentage of accounts remain active 1 month, 3 months, or even 1 year after activation?
