Jainism has a thriving tradition of sati narratives. These are popular stories about chaste women and the miraculous powers their chastity grants them. Fohr argues that, in Hinduism, the image of woman first and foremost as a temptress (rather than a soteriological agent) impeded the attraction of Hindu women to a life of mendicancy. On the other hand, she claims, the representation of women as satis or chaste women, capable of a life of renunciation, facilitated the entry of Jain women into its monastic orders. Fohr also cites the popular circulation of sati narratives as evidence of the Jain conception of the feminine as essentially chaste. Jain tradition recognizes 16 mahasatis (great satis),13 whose lives and deeds are recorded in the canonical texts, later commentaries and popular biographical tales. These biographical literatures document their transition from pious laywomen to nuns. The most popular sati narratives are the stories of sati Rajimati and Chandanabala (the first head of the nuns’ order during Mahavira’s time). Many nuns and laywomen repeated these stories by way of elaborating the ideals of feminine chastity among the Jains. These are also the subjects of popular drama performances during Jain festivals or chaturmas.
The life of Chandanbala
Without doubt, the most feted of all Jain female renouncer figures is Chandanbala, the first woman to take ordination under Mahavira. She is seen by nuns and laity alike as a model of renunciation; her extraordinary life worthy of popular propagation. Hers is a story that is widely known among ordinary Jains, and her trials and tribulations are the stuff of popular drama performances and Jain storybooks.
Mahasati (female ascetic) Chandanbala occupies a unique place among the leading 16 satis of Jain relegious history. Besides being learned, virtuous and devoted to penance, she became the first sadhvi (nun) of the sadhvi sangh (order of nuns) founded by Bhagwan Mahavir and thereafter she enjoyed the honour of being the first sadhvi-president (head of the order of nuns) of 35000 sadhvis. Her life-sketch conveys the message that virtue is greater than caste or creed.
She was the daughter of King Dadhivahan of Champa and queen Dharini and was also known as Vasumati. It was from her mother that she had imbibed the virtues of tolerance, renunciation and religious faith. As a result of such grooming, she desired spiritual growth and she decided not to marry. Knowing her mind and intentions full well, her parents allowed her very willingly to remain firm in her vow. Meanwhile, Shatanik, the king of Kaushambi attacked Champa and Chandanbala was sold as a dasi (a female slave). But Dhanvah Sheth paid adequate money and saved Chandanbala from becoming a courtesan. Dhanvah Sheth had treated her as his own daughter.
Once Dhanvah Sheth happened to return from a tour, and as usual she went to him to wash his feet; meanwhile, in order to save her loose hair from falling into the dirty water, Dhanvah Sheth lifted it up with the good intention. Mula Shethani, Dhanvah Sheth’s wife happened to see this sight and she became immensely jealous. Once when Dhanvah Sheth was away from the town, Mula Shethani took the opportunity and cut off Chandanbala’s hair; then her feet were chained and she was driven into a cellar. She had to go without food and water for three full days. When Dhanvah Sheth returned he sensed the situation and decided to call a blacksmith. Meanwhile he gave her some boiled unsplit black beans, kept there for the cattle, in a winnowing basket.
It so happened that Bhagwan Mahavir arrived in this Kaushambi city. As per the Jain tradition, he had made secret resolutions regarding food-stuff i.e. to accept only boiled unsplit black beans and that too if they were lying at the corner of a winnowing basket. As regards the place, the resolution was to the effect that such black beans be accepted only from a person having one foot inside a threshold and the other one out of it. As regards the time, he had resolved that such food be accepted only if the time for accepting alms, that is the lunchtime, had already passed.
As regards bhav (sentiment) element, it was so resolved that she should be a princess subjected to slavery, her feet should be chained, head be fully shaven, eyes be full of tears; she should have undertaken aihtham (continuous three days fasting) penance and should be a holy sati. He had resolved that food be accepted only if such a woman offered alms. Bhagwan Mahavir, thus, accepted alms from Chandanbala after five months and twenty-five days. Everyone realized the truth. Her chains broke miraculously. She regained her beautiful hair. As soon as Bhagwan Mahavir accepted alms from her, there was divine shower of flowers. King Shatanik and Mula Shethani begged to be forgiven for all their misdeeds.
After twelve years, Lord Mahavir was enlightened. Indrabhuti and other Brahmins embraced the monkshood with the blessing of Lord Mahavir.
Chandana heard the news and wanted to become a nun. Her family tried to persuade her to marry a prince but she refused and went to Lord Mahavir. All the royal families got together and gave her permission and had a great celebration for her.
Chandanbala was truly noble, beautiful and a winner. When Bhagwan Mahavira attained omniscience, Chandanbala embraced asceticism and became the first nun, and the head of the order of nuns. She was the first disciple of Lord Mahavira and the first Jain nun by 599 BC, when Lord Mahavira attained Moksha, his followers consisted of 14,000 monks, 36,000 nuns 159,000 shravaks and 318,000 shravikas. The group of nuns was led by Chandanbala, the Mahasati.
Chandanbala became the first disciple of Bhagwan Mahavir and being a torchbearer for mankind, she ultimately attained divine knowledge (kevaljnana).

चंदनबाला का जीवन

ऐसा हुआ कि भगवान महावीर इस कौशम्बी शहर में पहुंचे। जैन परंपरा के अनुसार, उन्होंने केवल खाद्य उबले हुए काले सेम स्वीकार करने के लिए खाद्य पदार्थों के बारे में गुप्त संकल्प किए थे और वह भी अगर वे एक उग्र टोकरी के कोने में झूठ बोल रहे थे। इस जगह के संबंध में, संकल्प इस प्रभाव के लिए था कि इस तरह के काले सेम केवल एक व्यक्ति के पास एक पैर के अंदर एक पैर से और दूसरे में से एक को स्वीकार किया जाता है। उस समय के संबंध में, उन्होंने हल किया था कि इस तरह के भोजन को केवल तभी स्वीकार किया जाएगा जब भत्ता स्वीकार करने का समय, जो कि लंचटाइम है, पहले से ही पारित हो चुका था।
भाव (भावना) तत्व के संबंध में, यह इतना हल हो गया था कि वह दासता के अधीन राजकुमारी होनी चाहिए, उसके पैरों को जंजीर होना चाहिए, सिर पूरी तरह से मुंडा होना चाहिए, आंखें आँसू से भरे रहेंगी; उसे एहिथम (लगातार तीन दिन उपवास) तपस्या करनी चाहिए और एक पवित्र सती होना चाहिए। उन्होंने हल किया था कि भोजन केवल तभी स्वीकार किया जाएगा जब ऐसी महिला ने भेंट की पेशकश की हो। इस प्रकार भगवान महावीर ने पांच महीने और पच्चीस दिनों के बाद चंदनबाला से भक्त स्वीकार किए। हर किसी ने सच महसूस किया। उसकी चेन चमत्कारी रूप से टूट गई। उसने अपने सुंदर बाल वापस कर लिया। जैसे ही भगवान महावीर ने उससे भक्त स्वीकार किए, फूलों का दिव्य स्नान था। राजा शातनिक और मुला शथानी ने अपने सभी कष्टों के लिए क्षमा करने की मांग की।
बारह वर्षों के बाद, भगवान महावीर प्रबुद्ध थे। इंद्रभूति और अन्य ब्राह्मणों ने भगवान महावीर के आशीर्वाद के साथ monkshood गले लगा लिया।
चंदाना ने खबर सुनी और नन बनना चाहता था। उसके परिवार ने उसे राजकुमार से शादी करने के लिए राजी करने की कोशिश की लेकिन उसने मना कर दिया और भगवान महावीर के पास गया। सभी शाही परिवार एक साथ हो गए और उसे अनुमति दी और उसके लिए एक महान उत्सव मनाया।
चंदनबाला वास्तव में महान, सुंदर और विजेता था। जब भगवान महावीर ने सर्वज्ञता प्राप्त की, चंदनबला ने तपस्या को गले लगा लिया और नन के आदेश का पहला नन बन गया। वह भगवान महावीर का पहला शिष्य था और 5 9 ईसा पूर्व पहली जैन नन थी, जब भगवान महावीर मोक्ष प्राप्त करते थे, उनके अनुयायियों में 14,000 भिक्षु, 36,000 नन 15 9, 000 श्रवकों और 318,000 श्रविका शामिल थे। नन के समूह का नेतृत्व चंदनबाला, महासाती ने किया था।
चंदनबाला भगवान महावीर का पहला शिष्य बन गया और मानव जाति के लिए मशालदार होने के नाते, उन्होंने अंततः दिव्य ज्ञान (केवलजन) प्राप्त किया।
