Source: post Steemit Growth Plan 2017
After using Steemit for a while now, I'm looking forward to an upgrade and at the same time I worry about it.
If you've read some of my earlier posts you will have noticed I'm not very impressed with the current Steemit layout, but I've gotten to appreciate it more.
For new users it is frustrating to find something they're interested in and just as frustrating that their posts quickly disappear from the main page.
Studies show that 90% of people searching on Google don't go beyond the first page, and the first 10 positions get 94% of the clicks.
Steemit has a continuous scroll page, so it is not completely the same, but essentially you want to make sure you rank high for views, comments and resteems.
So the question is now how to make Steemit a better experience.
If you look in this post about the growth plan of Steemit, you see that one of the major developments are communities.
Communities are essentially what all social networks are built on. Facebook is a prime example with their "friends of my friends are my friends" approach.
Which I don't agree with. Not every friend of a friend is someone I want to be associated with.
But in my opinion communities can also limit you.
Just think back when you still used Facebook. The only posts you see are from your friends, or sometimes from their friends.
And of course from groups you subscribed to.
Here too you run the risk of seeing way too many posts and skipping them or stop following friends and groups.
So, I'm wondering about the Steemit communities.
Is it a pre-defined set of communities?
If it is, do I still have the possibility to see all posts?
If it is not, how do we prevent the mess the groups in Facebook already create.
Even though I appreciate the hard work of the developers, in my opinion there is a lot more to gain by first introducing multi-language support.
Not seeing post in languages you're not interested in will already reduce the number of posts considerably.
And I would create a set of subjects that a post should belong to. Like the tags we use now, but mandatory.
The current completely free and on the fly tags cause sometimes more confusion than structure.
And then add a pull-down menu with these subjects to quickly jump between them to find posts that interest you.
As always I appreciate your comments, you may have a completely (and better?) idea, let's all share.
