I'm going to write a series of things I've learned here... as I learn them. I will keep them short and to the point to not waste too much of anyone's time. They are obviously meant for the new people because frankly they (like me) probably jumped in and have to learn on the fly. (Note: this is the 3rd in the series, if you want to see the others go to the bottom of this post for the links)
-If you have any questions about what I discuss, ask them in the comment section below
-If you like what I talked about and think your followers would like to learn from it, "RESTEEM" it.
(note: you don't get paid to resteem something, you just help to spread around a message that you like)
-If you have another topic you would like me to cover next, then also reply that request in the comment section
I asked today what my fellow newbies wanted discussed, so B it is:
Your Reputation and Why It Matters
First, your "Reputation" is a major factor that influences everything here on steemit. Reputation (shown above) is simply what value you bring to the community. It is a score that is calculated based on your interactions with others and how many upvotes you get and from whom. Its a way that steemit measures and sifts through the members that are good for the system vs. those that aren't so good.
Reputation is weighted giving the larger more prominent members' opinions higher weight. So if a newbie (like us) likes you or a post/comment you made, it improves your reputation score; but if a "WHALE" likes you or a post/comment you made, it REALLY REALLY improves your reputation score. Its like the smartest or coolest guy in school endorsing you, so your rank goes up among the others.
As your reputation goes up, so does your own influence over others. People look up to their peers and strive to improve their relationships with the people they value. This helps you get more followers and get more attention to your posts, which essentially helps you get RESPECT.
So as a newbie the thing to focus on most is improving your Reputation Score.
How Can I Increase My Reputation
The best way to get an increasing reputation is to get out into the community and "engage" with others. Read other authors' posts and comment on what YOU LIKED about them. But be sincere and original, because after all it is your reputation you are trying to build. Don't copy and paste canned answers, but truly respond to others with respect.
(Helpful Hint: I have earned far more money from commenting in the comment section than from making any post I've made... Like 100x more)
I try to read at least 50 different posts a day in areas of interest to me and comment honestly when I see something important to say. The authors realize who is saying good things because they mean it (versus just trying to get an upvote), so just be genuine and open and that fact will get you the respect. The old saying: give respect and get respect!
Hint: remember anyone can read anyone else's comments and see what you are saying to others, so realize that you can't really fake being real for very long. So be genuine always ;)
Finally another way to improve your reputation is to get noticed by doing something kind for others. You'd be surprised at how many likes I've gotten from the big steemers when I decided to help others. I didn't offer to help someone for the purpose of getting their respect, but I earned some respect by helping others out here on steemit. Does that make sense?
A great place to do this is when interacting with other newbies and politely helping them learn some things that you've learned that they might not know. All the big steemers want a great and charitable community with helpful and encouraging members, that's what will make this platform more valuable. And when you realize in order for EVERYONE to make money we all need to be good steemians, you will recognize and respect those people that help others too.
How Do I Track More Carefully My Reputation Score and Points
You can track very carefully your reputation points at the following link:
https://steemd.com/@yourusername (Yes this is the same spot as your Voting Power page) ;)
Notice it is calculated to the more detailed tenth of a point, which comes in handy to see the impact of your interactions as your score grows.
If you scroll down that page on the left you will also get an EVEN BETTER look at your reputation by seeing the way the system calculates it EXACTLY
This is just another tip of something I have learned in my first 9 days. I have many more things I've learned and if people seem to find it interesting, then I will continue to prepare more of these tips that I find. It is up to you in the community to let me know if it is useful.
I want to point out that I am by no means an expert and I am just offering my humble advice based on what I have learned. If any more experienced users have more to add, I welcome them to do so and help everyone out!
Thanks for reading and I hope I can help a few people along the way :)
