"Steemit" is interesting as it is associated with some people from the 'early crypto' industry whom i know were 'decent' and 'honest' (which later became an increasingly rare thing)
Here is my basic analysis of Steemit
- The content appears to be hosted in a decentralized way (although i'm still trying to gain more technical insight to that)
- signup currently needs a 'Facebook' or a 'Reddit' account (i'd recommend just make a Facebook for that purpose as i did)
- 'Medium' has already attacked the site (which made me interested in it)
here is one such 'critique'
"Steemit — An Incentivized Social Media Platform or a Scam?"

Analysis
All of the criticisms of 'Steemit' are based around the fact that the early miners of the cryptocurrency own a large % of the 'Steem' currency and thus they can manipulate which content or information gets promoted on the 'Steemit' platform. (essentially the front page)
This is because the content that gets 'promoted' uses 'Steem' crypto to up-vote so who owns the 'Steem' crypto can better influence what
gets onto the 'Popular' section of the 'Steemit' front page.
Also users can get 'paid' by other users for their content which is a direct incentive system.
for me this is all largely irrelevant as a 'criticism'
Why the content manipulation vector doesn't stand up.
If the content is decentralized and users can link to it, it is still better in large %'s than all other content currently on the 'internet'
The fact that 'Steemit' Front page can be manipulated by the original miners (as opposed to Agency/Corp/Gov sponsored Shills) just means that the Agency/Corp/Gov will need to Buy or mine 'Steem' to try to manipulate the content on the site.
This seems 'fair' in the sense that the original developers have put time effort and resources into the decentralized platform this is basically their 'payment' for their significant time effort and resources.
If 'Steemit' was 'Twitter' would people be criticizing the very few VC Corporations that were funded by 'Someone' and then listed on some 'Stock exchange' to make 'Twitter' for Twitter to then censor and control the content (in most cases deleting it from the platform i.e total censorship)
I find it interesting that there is no similar 'Scam' outrage directed towards the Twitter CEO, the VC that funded Twitter and the Stock exchange that it is listed on?
if 'Steemit' can provide these basic services I believe it is a worthwhile project :
- - A Decentralized base / platform for content (that can be linked to)
- - Censorship free base. I.E no central 'decider' (human) is deciding what content EXISTS on that platform or base.
- - A non controlled interconnected information base so no central 'Decider' (human) is deciding who gets 'muted' from other users.
