Hey Steemians,
This is a follow-up post of 'Promoting Steem at Blockchain Meetup in Bangalore...'. The meetup event happened on 16th December 2017 (Saturday) afternoon. Totally 80+ people had registered for the event. Being Saturday afternoon, people were interested to know about Blockchain, Bitcoin etc.
As expected, there were many techiesā . Few of them were in management role, consultants, students etc. Overall it was a good mix of audience.
Topics
The topics for the day were,
How Bitcoin works by Kiran Abburi
Evaluation of Major Blockchain Networks by Shachindra
Social Network using Blockchain by Aleem (thats me!)
The first two sessions about Bitcoin and different types of Blockchain were good. Lot of information about Blockchain ecosystem and how major companies like Microsoft, Intel etc are working on Blockchain technology. Also, there were discussions on suitable Blockchain model for solving specific business problems. Blockchain is indeed disruptive!
I spoke about Steem Blockchain under the 3rd topic 'Social Network using Blockchain'. Most of them were unaware of Steem or steemit. Only 2-4 had known about steemit and two of them had signed up but never posted anything itseems, later got to know that they couldn't understand the platform clearly and most of the discussions were about cryto itseems. Now things have changed alot in Steemit.
Presentation
I spoke about the following things,
- What is Steem Blockchain & how does it work?
- Account creation
- Wallet & Keys
- How to post, upvote, comments
- STEEM, SBD and Steem Power(SP)
- Cash out - Transfers
- Exciting Projects based on Steem Blockchain
- Bots, Steemit.Chat, Discord
- API - SteemJS
I knew there would be many developers so it would be disappointing if I don't talk about Steem API, SteemJS and how to develop apps on Steem Blockchain.
Everyone were wow-ed by know about the capability and potential of Steem Blockchain and I also touched upon SMT. Many were curious to know more and obviously everyone were facebook, twitter, quora users so instantly they were able grasp the benefits of steemit.
Some of them felt that Steemit will beat other existing traditional social media networks like facebook etc. Some of them felt facebook will come up with something similar to Steem or buy Steem Inc to kill the competition.
I also introduced Utopian, imagine what would happen if developers who used to contribute to open source get to know that they can monetize their efforts! Quickly they noted down the link. At least for utopian, many would join steem and then hooked on to other amazing stuffs in steem.
Other applications which I mentioned were Steepshot, DTube, eSteem etc.
Questions
I was able to guage interest of audience based on their questions. There were many questions, I really enjoyed answering them. This was encouraging to engage with audience. Some of the questions were,
- How is Steem is different from facebook, reddit ?
- How do people get to know about steemit, are there any marketing initiative, promotions etc ?
- How can we develop applications leveraging Steem Blockchain ?
- Will Facebook buy Steem Inc to kill competition ?
- If Steem approves registrations based only on email ID & mobile number then there can be many duplicate accounts which would spam & abuse the ecosystem, how can steem handle this ?
- I'm not good in writing articles then how can I make use of Steem.
- Why do we have 2 cryptocurrency - STEEM & SBD ? [I was expecting this :) ]
Feedback
After the event, I got feedback from the audience. Overall they felt it useful and informative. Conveyed their thanks for sharing so many things in detail with everyone and not just keeping it to myself. They wanted to explore the platform.
Next event
Next Blockchain Bangalore meetup is scheduled for 20th Jan 2018. If you are interested to give a talk or just to attend then register here. Already one topic is confirmed - 'Blockchain Consensus Algorithms'.
Conclusion
It was a time well-spent on Saturday evening. I'm happy that many of them got to know about Steem Blockchain and steemit. I would continue to spread Steem education across different professionals - developers, students, bloggers, photographers etc.
I also encourage fellow steemians to spread the word among your social circles to on-board many people. Especially in India, we have potential to make Steemit reach billion users. According to recent post by @firepower, India is now the 4th biggest traffic source for Steemit!.
2018 looks exciting for crypto world and Steemit. Share your thoughts and opinion in the comments.
Resteem this post so that it can reach many people and encourage others to promote steem.
All the SP from this post will be delegated to #teamindia. An initiative to onboard & support Indians in Steemit.
