Hello there.
Today was a good day for Dan as he felt it was time to confess what we were already suspecting was true... that he was working on a project like STEEM.
However, he claims that this new improved version or STEEM 2.0 as he called it in his conversation is going to be much better.
But what does MUCH BETTER mean?
Well, we all know some things about Dan and about his work, so here's my opinion on what the crowd wants, what Dan will deliver and what will really happen.
It's worth what it's worth, read below for my point of view.
Dan's Track Record: A Superb Developer
There's no arguing that @dan is a stellar developer. He is the best "blockchainsmith" I know and in my book he is a total rockstar.
I use both STEEM and Bitshares and I can tell you that if you don't use bitshares you're missing out.
On the other hand, this is something that gives this STEEM 2.0 a great outlook as far as technicalities and performance are concerned.
We can rest assured that the project is going to be technically solid and from a development point of view it is going to be SUPERIOR to STEEM.
STEEM is great, don't get me wrong, but I'm sure @dan learned a lot in these 2 years, and that he is now going to build something better.
Dan's Project Record: Build It and Leave It
Dan isn't the man to run his projects.
He is a builder, not a manager. He knows how to envision projects and he knows how to build them, but I don't expect him to stick around.
STEEM was left with @ned and I don't know who will get STEEM 2.0 but in my opinion @dan isn't for sure.
He is going to leave in search of his next big project and someone will be left behind to handle and run the actual platform, blockchain, app or whatever it REALLY is
EOS is just another average empty ERC20 token so far, so we really need more time and info to know if it's going to be any good.
Sure, we KNOW it's going to be good, but Dan isn't very good at surrounding himself by Marketing Competent people.
Marketing... Does it Have to Suck?
Let's look at @dan's projects... they are superior on the technical side, but damn their marketing sucks.
I know it because I'm a Marketer.
I don't consider myself to be the best, but damn these projects are underrated... and they are underrated for a reason - incompetent marketing staff.
With a project like STEEM, I would be working my ass off every day of the week and I would harrass so many people my knuckles would go bloody from all the door knocking.
But the marketing guys, if they exist here, are just like... I don't know... farming or something lol.
Instead of watching Dr. Oz and trying the latest detox juice based diet, they could promote this blockchain powerhouse better...
... I fear the same will happen to STEEM 2.0
That it will be underrated because its marketing, as Dan's latest projects, will be subpar.
Upgrading STEEMit: What to Correct?
Another thing is that he says he is going to correct the flaws here.
Don't get me wrong, I know this isn't perfect... but what flaws is he talking about?
I mean, I can see a couple easy to correct like the registration and SMTs, but that's coming next hardfork so what exactly are we talking about?
I've read some people saying it's about:
- Not being biased towards early adopters;
- Not being biased towards money investors;
BUT ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
THAT WOULD SUCK!
No advantages for investors who are willing to put their cash in so the project starts well even though it's at its MOST VULNERABLE MOMENT?
No advantages to those who supported the platform right from the start?
Heck that would be a terrible place to be in.
On the other hand, some other people claim it's about the bot situation... well, @penguinpablo already did the statistics and only, I don't know, 1.7% of voting or something like vastly inferior to 5% is done by bots.
I don't see it as being a problem BECAUSE systems like these will always have it.
Basically, if people can profit with it, they will find a way, no matter how many credentials, captchas, bot busters and everything you can implement.
Bots here are actually not a problem at all in my opinion, people just freak out about that 1.7% because they think it's like 50% or something.
Another thing they say is problematic is the fact that "it's hard to get noticed if you're not a whale or a whale friend".
That isn't the case either, I'm 3 months something old and I already had a post on number 1 in trending and have 2100 followers and a pretty profitable blog.
Why?
I don't pay anyone for it, I don't have a vote that can get me into circle-jerks, what I do have is hard work every day.
The system is not as flawed as many may think.
Which leads me to the next step.
Dan Has a Beautiful Vision of the World: But it Can't Happen!
@Dan, as I said in the beggining of the article, I love you man. You're the best.
But, your vision of the world is a bit too utopian like. It's impossible.
People are humans, humans are not perfect, and sure you can have a good little utopian platform for you, me and like-minded individuals... BUT if we're going at changing the world here and going into mass adoption...
... You got to account for the imperfect masses.
It just doesn't work that way.
With mass adoption comes the "unwashed" masses who are still programmed to live in their world of scarcity.
Our job is to try to "convert" them to see the world the right way, and with time maybe we'll do it... but it's too soon to build that perfect blockchain.
So, don't get frustrated if you consider the next project to be ruined as well.
You also considered STEEM to be ruined beyond repair, and I love the platform with all its flaws, it still has a lot of great "good stuff."
Anyway, guys, in conclusion:
What do you think of all of this?
Let me know down in the comments below, after you upvote me so I can buy more EOS.
Cheers
