Time to jump in on another of our white belt classes with a good mix of warm-up, technique, specific and rolling. This is the ongoing expose of the white belt BJJ curriculum as taught at our academy and throughout our lineage/affiliation. Take a look and inspire yourself to go take a free trial in your area, or refine your technique and throw me some feedback if you already train.
Today, we look at establishing a good half guard, a position we call 4 points, and a sweep sequence from there.
Personal perspective and thoughts:
- Elbows and Knees - It always seemed that blue belt and above were always too many knees and elbows to content with. Establishing that frame, connecting those knees and elbows, and refusing to stay pinned flat on your back will do wonders for your half guard.
- Getting up on that elbow - I used to get stuck and pinned so much because I didn't p[rogress that position to get the underhook across the back. Stay active and aggressive!
- Keep the pressure on - I generally am aiming to progress all the way to diving under and getting that leg for the roll-over sweep. Along the way, if I can take the back, or power through with the lateral double leg, then bonus!
- There is always a what if. There is always an answer. That is Jiu Jitsu.
