With Luan’s grandparents visiting, he knew he would have a lot of fun. He always heard stories from his grandfather about things that happened not so long ago, as life had moved very fast in the last century. Grandpa all these stories you are telling me, we must write down for the new baby, I am so scared that I might forget some of them. When the baby is old enough to understand we can go through the book and learn some more of these.
We must buy a book and start writing everything down, maybe when I am grownup I can also tell them those stories. Oh Luan that is such a good idea, as I am also starting to forget some of them, it is something that happen with old age.
This book can go on forever as the family grow and the eldest son must always get the book. The two of them told Luan’s mother and grandmother and they also thought it was a good idea.
Luan’s mother said, buy two so that grandmother can give me some of her fantastic recipes that I do not have, and do not know how to make.
After they had their breakfast, Luan and his grandfather left for the book shop and bought two beautiful books to put their memories in.
They then saw the baby book and decided it would be a good gift for Luan's mother.
Luan’s grandfather said let us be a bit naughty, and go and have a waffle and milkshake, your grandmother said I am eating too much sugar but cannot remember when last I had any of these.
Luan laughed and said that is such a good idea, as mother and I went for some the other day after she took me to see how syrup and maple syrup is made. I will show you where there is a waffle house not far from here. They were laughing and his grandfather said I feel like a naughty kid doing this.
Once they placed their order he asked his grandfather what else they did on the farm in his days that they do not do anymore. We did not have tractors like today; we used oxen to pull a plough and walked behind it.
Life was a lot slower in those days. It took a long time to plough, but we all worked together and it was the children’s jobs to plant the vegetables for use in the house.
We grew all our own vegetables and remember we had our own milk butter and eggs like I told you yesterday. The oxen walked slowly and it took us days to finish a land.
We even made our own coffee as my mother use to roast the beans in the Cole stove as we did not have electricity on the farm.
We then made turns to grind the coffee beans.
It was standing on the stove the whole day so my father use to come inside have some coffee and then leave to go on with his work.
The ground coffee was put into a bag, made of material and the water was then just boiling away all the time.
We had to find wood and make a fire for our mother every day that she just filled on as the fire started going down.
We also had coal standing on next to the stove for our mother.
We had a big bucket of wood next to the stove for her. As I already told you the three of us went to a little school on horseback, but when we got home all the work started for us as we had to see that there was enough wood, water the vegetables from a well that was not too far from the house and do everything our mother asked from us.
The things that we could not make, we got from a man who came round with his horse carriage, he had everything on there from cups and saucers and anything we needed. We did not always have money and we swapped out food and vegetables for what we needed, that is actually how money started to exist.
I will tell you more about that later as those two at home will be wondering what has become of us.
Luan enjoyed listening to his grandfather and was so glad that there were more stories, but he did agree they will get suspicious if we do not go home now.
If they do not ask if we ate something don’t say anything, but we cannot lie if they ask, so let’s hope they do not ask.
When they got home grandpa gave his wife a kiss and bunches of flowers he bought for them both. Luan heard his grandmother say, he must have eaten a waffle that is why he bought the flowers so that I won’t ask and he will not have to lie. Luan just smiled and asked if they wanted to see the beautiful books they bought and who wants which one.
Yes said his grandmother smiling, I will make some tea as grandfather must really be a bit empty and thirsty by now. They all went into the kitchen and put the flowers in water.
The two men put the books down and said you may choose, we even bought the new baby one as well.
Luan's mother thanked him and was very pleased.
Hope you enjoyed my story and have a wonderful day from me.
