Measurement Word Problems Based on Metric Units of Length, Mass and Capacity
Once kids in grade 4 understand the metric units of length, mass and capacity the next step is to apply this knowledge to solve day to day word problems involving these units.
For example; two sister weigh 85 kg 200g. Older one weighs 48kg 150g then how much younger sister weighs?
To solve such problems kids should be able to add and subtract mixed units. Following patterns can help kids to easily solve word problems involving units of measurement.
Ask your child to repeat the following patterns in his/her mind.
200g, 300g, 400g, 500g, 600g, 700g, 800g, 900g, 1000g, 1100g, 1200g OR
200g, 300g, 400g, 500g, 600g, 700g, 800g, 900g, 1kg, 1kg 100g, 1kg 200g
Similarly the following pattern
500ml, 1000ml, 1500ml, 2000ml, 2500ml, 3000ml OR
500ml, 1L, 1L 500ml, 2L, 2L 500ml, 3L
You can make one more pattern with units of length as shown below;
200m, 400m, 600m, 800m, 1000m, 1200m, 1400m, 1600m, 1800m, 2000m OR
200m, 400m, 600m, 800m, 1km, 1km 200m, 1km 400m, 1km 600m, 1km 800m, 2km.
