Suppose you're stuck in the wrong place and your mobile battery is over. Because you do not have access to electricity or even solar energy, you will inevitably come to the last possible opportunity: your mouth water. This is the same idea that researchers at the Binghamton University in New York have been developing and developing a battery that is charged with water.
This process is another step in the development of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) that transmits electrical currents through existing bacteria. Professor Seokheun Choi of the research team focuses on building small-scale energy sources for use in health products in outlying areas, areas that may not have access to uninterrupted electricity.
Exoelectrogens are microorganisms with the ability to transfer electrons beyond their cell walls to an electrode. All they need is something to eat. In Choi’s battery, saliva serves two functions. It rouses the frozen cells from their slumber, and it provides food for the microorganisms. Within minutes of spitting on the exoelectrogens, the battery will start churning out electricity. Choi said the device is “the first paper-based bio-battery activated by body fluids.”
These sources of energy are required without the need for much power, especially for diagnostic equipment in developing countries.
These new battery-based bacteria are based on paper. In their manufacture, the MFC-depleted freeze dried cells, which can transmit electricity outside of the cell walls, are called exoelectrogens. These cells are soaked using water and thus their energy production capacity is activated.
said Seokheun Choi, a professor for computer science at Binghamton University and coauthor of the study. “For the long-term storage, the bacterial cells are freeze-dried until use. This battery can even be used in challenging environmental conditions like desert areas. All you need is an organic matter to rehydrate and activate the freeze-dried cells.”
says Choi,So while your spit won't power your phone battery any time soon, once it can power one LED light, it will stand to reason that it can be made to power several more.
