Working from home – it sounds ideal, right? Well, it can be ideal when you are set-up in a functional way. One would think that easy access to paper, pens and the internet is all you need to create the most functional working space. You may even think that there is no way you would be able to work at home due to too many distractions. Well, I have news for you – Things get way better (with a little bit of effort and planning).
I have compiled a list, from my personal experiences and research, of things that you can do to create an ideal and functional home work space.
Number 1: Get the Natural Light flowing
During the day, when the sun is shining, it always feels good to soak it up. Our mood changes in the sunlight. But, since we are inside at our work space, we don’t get the chance to soak it up.
Try to set-up your space near to a window or skylight. Get that natural light flowing towards you. Your mood will change from gloomy and un-motivated to positive and ready-to-go.
Number 2: Declutter
An organized space makes for an organized mind… Truer words were never spoken.
Remove any unnecessary books, boxes, stationary and things. It’s a lot easier to find things when you don’t have to wade through rubbish and clutter. PLUS, it’s nice to look at a neat work space - you don’t get that dreadful feeling of “Uhhggg, where am I meant to sit?”
Number 3: Let’s Colour!
Studies have shown that different colours activate certain feeling’s or emotions within you. For instance: Green can bring about a sense of calmness and being grounded. Yellow promotes creativity and positivity. Blue promotes trustworthiness while it feels very inviting. Browns can invoke a sense of sturdiness.
Number 4: Breeze through
Air quality is always important, especially in a small space. It is always a good idea to have a constant through-draft of air. Keep it moving. Stale air never does you any good. So, keep the air circulating to prevent certain illnesses and bad smells.
Number 5: Privacy Please
I know it is sometimes hard to get a little privacy at home, but there are creative ways of doing so. Move a little furniture around and play with the space to create a slight barrier from the outside world. Maybe put up a screen or curtain. If its noise that you want to get away from, it will be worth it to invest in some noise canceling headphones.
Number 6: Comfort is Key
Invest in a comfortable ergonomic chair that will allow you to sit for long periods of time without causing discomfort to your back. There are few worse distractions than a sore back while you are trying to concentrate.
