Splinterlands - Pulled A Beta Gold Foil Cocatrice Without Using Potions

Splinterlands (aka Steem Monsters) is an online Trading Card Game running on the Steem blockchain and with some Tron blockchain functionality. This is the decentralized app (dApp) game that I play the most these days. It's absolutely top notch, there are constant improvements and additions to the game and if that wasn't good enough there are several ways to earn money playing Splinterlands!

One way to earn money is to sell cards that you get through playing the game. At this point you are capable of acquiring every type of card that is currently available just through playing the game. The easiest of these would be through completing the daily quest and earning some free Reward edition cards. This can be done every day. Also, every two weeks a season ends and you will get additional Reward edition cards based on the highest rank you achieved during that season. Sometimes you get lucky and one of these reward cards is quite valuable.

Another way to get cards from playing the game is to accumulate some Dark Energy Crystals (DEC) through winning battles and then spend that DEC on "Orbs." An orb is a pack of five Winds of Change edition cards. Another thing you can do is spend your DEC on buying a Mystery Potion. I recommend saving up for the Brilliant Mystery Potion if you're going to do this because it guarantees that you will get a Mystery Gift every day for five days. Sometimes these gifts are just a single Reward edition card, but sometimes you'll get an Orb or even a Beta edition Booster pack! There is also a special Promo card that can only be obtained as a Mystery Gift and it's a really cool (and expensive!) Summoner. There are very few of these around and only one is given out randomly to Mystery Potion users every other day.

Now with that out of the way, it's time for me to brag about my good luck! I got a Beta edition Booster pack and when I opened it I got a desirable Rare card, Cocatrice and it was also Gold Foil edtion! Every card in the game (except for perhaps the Mystery Potion Promo Summoner) has a Gold Foil edition version which is more rare and gives you a boost in your DEC earnings when you play the game using them. Right now on the market the Gold Foil edition Cocatrice card is going for $15 USD and above. I don't think I'll sell this one right now because I can use it in my battles.

One other option is to rent out cards you aren't using. There is a market called Peak Monsters that has a rental function built in. Right now the going rate for renting is about 5% ROI. According to the website, ROI is calculated with the following formula:

(((MAX_DAYS * DAILY_FEE + ESCROW / 2) * (30 / MAX_DAYS)) / ESTIMATED_CARD_VALUE)
