This coin came to me recently as a gift from a dear friend in Scotland . This 231 year old does not look too bad for its age I think . This coin was the first six pence of the George III era . (1760-1820) Our coin today is the semee of hearts variety . This coin was minted of 92.5 % silver , weighs 3 grams and is 21 mm in diameter .
The obverse of this coin features the armored laureate bust of King George III facing right , surrounded by the legend GEORGIVS·III·DEI·GRATIA· (George III by the Grace of God) .
The very busy reverse of today's coin shows a cross made of shields that symbolize George III's regal claims , crowns in the field , an abbreviated surrounding legend "M B F ET H REX F D B ET L D S R I A T ET E" (King of Great Britain , France and Ireland , Defender of the Faith , Duke of Brunswick and Lueneburg , Arch Treasurer and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire ), and date below(1787) . The top shield shows three lions to the left, representing England , and one lion to the right representing Scotland. The lower shield shows a harp, representing Ireland . The left shield shows the Hanoverian* arms ,and the right shield shows three Fleur-de-lis, representing France . *The "House of Hanover" , the dynasty which ruled the United Kingdom from 1714 to 1901 .You will also notice in the "Hanoverian" shield there are some tiny hearts that is known as a semee of hearts .
The edge of this beauty is reeded !!
