Today i am going to talk about ACHALASIA CARDIA, to easily remember it is BIRD BEAK appearance in radiography.
PATHOLOGY:
This is a motor disorder of the oesophagus - charecterised by loss of peristalsis, *increased LES( lower iesophageal sphincter) pressure & absent or incomplete relaxation of LES.
CLINICAL FEATURES
- Dysphagia
- Vomiting
- Weightloss
- Respiratory symptoms.
Toddlers present with coughing and feeding aversion.
DIAGNOSIS
Radiodiagnosis by BARIUM SWALLOW- Bird beak appearance is seen due to narrowing of LES and dilatation of oesophagus.

Endoscopy is done to exclude other etiologies of dysphagia.
TREATMENT
- Endoscopic pneumatic balloon dilation
- Hellers cardiomyotomy with antireflux procedure
These are main therapeutic modalities.
