Back in the late 80's, I drove back across country from CA to MA. As fate would turn out, I brought along a 19 year old daughter of a friend I was close with at the time, because she wanted to travel and see something other than just California. I had helped her get a job as the "mail girl" for the law firm I worked for In Saratoga, CA at the time, and it was not unusual for the "mail" to include some of the best pot around at the time. Those were the days!
Lots more to that story, but let me just proceed with our journey. We did bring a bit of pot along with us as we progressed across country. We also had some blotter acid with us. At that time I had a Saab, long before they were a yuppie thing. I bought it at an auto flea market for $1,500 because it had front wheel drive, and back then I liked to go away camping and skiing on weekends, up to Yosemite and Heavenly Valley, and the seats went down, and I could sleep in the back.
As we embarked on this trip across country, my Saab didn't have a working odometer, so I really didn't know what my speed limit was. Frequently, on a major highway, when we were perhaps a bit too stoned, I would notice that everyone was speeding past us, and some blowing their horns, realizing that I was probably just plodding along in a high haze? That car was full of junk food wrappers before the trip was over and as I recall, we each gained at least five pounds on that trip!
We tried the blotter acid first time before entering Nashville pretty late at night. We went into a diner for something to eat, and we couldn't stop laughing and freaking out about how weird everyone looked. Seriously! We thought we had landed on another planet. I guess most of the other patrons probably thought we were from another planet?
But, let me back up to the woo-woo. We were driving through some really back roads across Oklahoma when my car just died, I mean, engine just stopped going down a hill. I was able to coast to the side of the road at the bottom of the hill. We got out, lifted the hood, looked around, pushed and pulled on some stuff, but had no clue why the car had just stopped.
It was a bright sunny day, we still had some pot, we were out in the middle of nowhere, no cell phones back then, so we left the hood up, and smoked a joint and plopped down in the sun just to see what would happen. It was an amazing moment of not really giving a shit.
After about 20 minutes or so, a car comes down the hill above us, and pulls up, and a guy with a heavy Oaky accent, asks us, what seems to be the trouble? I explained that my car just stopped, ca-plunk. He says, mind if I take a look? No, please do. About 40 seconds later he says, I think it's your condenser. I said, what is a condenser? He says, it's just a fuse. So, he then commences to go back to his big ole American car, and then comes back with a condenser, still in the box, plops it into my foreign Saab car, and then says, start it up. It started right up! I said, OMG, what do I owe you? He said, it's only a 45 cent part, no worries, and off he went.
That is some woo-woo!
Oh, and blotter acid on the top of the Empire State Building followed, but that's another story.
Moral of this, there are angels all around us, if we just chill and wait for them!
