TASS via Daily Mirror reported Thursday (17/05/2018), drone named Poseidon is planned to be joining the Russian Navy between this year until 2027.
Anonymous officials at the Defense Ministry said the nuclear-powered drone could travel at 130 km / h, and be at depths of up to 1,000 meters.
In addition, Poseidon can be equipped with conventional torpedoes and nuclear warheads.
Includes one thermonuclear torpedo.
The official explained that the torpedo with a thermonuclear bomb is similar to that on the intercostal ballistic missile (ICBM) Avangard.
"With the bomb on the Poseidon torpedo, the explosive power it generates can reach two megatons," the source added.
The unmanned submarine is destined for the destruction of bases and enemy naval infrastructure.
The Poseidon drone project was first conceived by President Vladimir Putin during a meeting of Russia's Federal Council on March 1.
Putin in his speech said, in addition to destroying the enemy base, Poseidon also served to paralyze the fleet cluster of the opposing country.
Chief of Staff of the Russian Navy, Sergei Korolyov said, Poseidon was created to complete various missions that require close contact to the enemy.
Korolyov revealed, a series of tests had been done to the submarine.
Among others, by trying the nuclear reactor that became the driving force.
The name of Poseidon, the name of the water god and horse protector in Greek Mythology, was taken from a poll conducted by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs online.
