"Hey dude, it's been a while! How you doin'? Listen - before you say anything. You won't believe this, but I was just about to call YOU when you called me! Isn't that crazy?! I literally just reached for the phone when it started ringing! That has to be the mother of coincidences. I mean, what are the odds? Goosebumps, dude! Anyway, long time. How have you been?"
I believe it was in the late 90ies when I read the book Cosmic Trigger and first learned the word synchronicity and the concept behind the phenomenon. From then on I was aware that some coincidences are in fact more than that. Synchronicities are the universe's way of reminding us that our reality is much more mysterious and magical than we realize.
I always found it exciting to experience such a "more-than-coincidence" coincidence. Following my initial discovery I experienced synchronicities every now and then, like we all do. But over the years I noticed a ramping up of the frequency in which I experienced the phenomenon. So much so that they started to stack up and I would experience 2-3 synchronicities on a single day. At one point I said to myself: "this is so crazy, I have to write this down, before I forget it".
So I did. That was 14 years ago. So since 2010 I've been keeping a record of my experiences. Whenever a remarkable coinkidink crossed my reality, I would type it down somewhere. Somewhere at one point became blogspot, because I wanted to share these reality mysteries with the world.
So I started posting my synchronistic experiences pretty much on a monthly basis, where I would relay the stuff that had happened to me over the course of a month. And I'm still doing it. So here we are.
Before today I've always written the blog in my native tongue (German), but English being the lingua franca of the internet, it makes sense to translate my blog in order to extend my reach. I've made a first attempt a while back, but I quickly found out it's quite an endeavor to translate a decade worth of diary entries and to my shame I never got very far.
But now in the times of chatgpt, translating has become a cinch. Ai tools have become so scary good that I could just post everything all at once in one go and be reasonably sure, that nothing (much) would get lost in translation.
But I won't. Instead I'll post my translated entries piecemeal. That way I can make sure that the Ai doesn't mangle my words too much, because there will always remain a margin of error.
And if you found this blog, maybe you actually prefer being notified of a new entry every now and then ;)
Synchronicities are timeless so I might as well start at the beginning. Before I started releasing my monthly recollections, the first thing I wrote was an introduction to the synchronicity phenomenon as a preamble. So let's start there. (This is also the only part I've ever gotten around to translate on my own without the help of some newfangled A.i. tool.)
The phenomenon of Synchronicity
Looking back at my life, it becomes clear to me that synchronicities have been with me as long as I can remember. In the last couple of years I noticed an accretion of synchronistic incidents in my life. However, until about 10 years ago I didn’t know what to call these strange experiences that seem to go beyond what’s commonly called “coincidence”. But what’s coincidence and what’s synchronicity, and what’s the difference?
According to Wikipedia:
“A coincidence is a remarkable concurrence of events or circumstances which have no apparent causal connection with each other. The perception of remarkable coincidences may lead to supernatural, occult, or paranormal claims. Or it may lead to belief in fatalism, which is a doctrine that events will happen in the exact manner of a predetermined plan.”
Synchronicity on the other hand:
"The idea of synchronicity is that the conceptual relationship of minds, defined as the relationship between ideas, is intricately structured in its own logical way and gives rise to relationships that are not causal in nature. These relationships can manifest themselves as simultaneous occurrences that are meaningfully related.
Synchronistic events reveal an underlying pattern, a conceptual framework that encompasses, but is larger than, any of the systems that display the synchronicity. The suggestion of a larger framework is essential to satisfy the definition of synchronicity as originally developed by Carl Gustav Jung.
Jung coined the word to describe what he called "temporally coincident occurrences of acausal events." Jung variously described synchronicity as an "acausal connecting principle", "meaningful coincidence" and "acausal parallelism".
So according to the definition of coincidence, synchronicity would be classified as the perception of remarkable coincidences as supernatural, occult or paranormal i.e. “meaningful coincidence”.
To me the main difference between a coincidence and a synchronicity is that coincidences tend to be singular in nature whereas synchronicities are cumulative. And yes, most of the time synchronicities are meaningful coincidences and as such don’t fit the description of pure coincidence anymore, therefore the differentiation.
For example: If you take a walk and you find a 10 Dollar note on the ground it’s a coincidence. It was coincidence that you just now happen to walk that way and to find the note on the ground.
However, were you to take a walk with someone and you talk about how you found money on the ground in the past and then you actually see a 10 Dollar note lying on the ground a couple of minutes later, then I would classify that incident as a meaningful coincidence i.e. a synchronicity.
Coincidence follows the law of probability. If someone visits the cinema, then it can’t be ruled out that they will meet someone they personally know who wants to see the same movie. They appear to meet their friend coincidentally, in truth the probability to meet them there is rather high.
Let’s say that they haven’t seen their friend in a long time and that as fate would have it, they also just came out of a relationship. People split up all the time, so the probability is still very high. But now it turns out that the two have seats directly next to each other. Maybe they have the same preference regarding where they like to sit – still in the realm of casual probability. Over the speakers they can hear the song “Last Christmas”, which revolves around splitting up and waiting to eventually meet someone else. Well, it’s December and the tune is a popular seasonal title which always plays around that time of year. They see a trailer where two friends meet after a long time and, surprise, surprise, also just split up with someone. Well, it’s a popular motive after all. So all this adds up to is just a chain of causalities. Or maybe there’s something more to it?
I didn’t make it easy for me with the examples I chose, because these incidents by and large are rather relatable. The cumulative nature of these coincidences appear to be exactly that. But the accumulation of coinciding incidents more and more reduces the probability of them being mere coincidences. If you look at the incidents of my hypothetical example as a whole, then only the mind of a machine would label this fateful encounter as just an accumulation of coincidences and nothing more.
For me what differentiates synchronicity from pure coincidence is the karmic component which I tried to touch upon in my example. With synchronicities you don’t just get arbitrary incidents, but such that they are connected to your own karma. In this case finding their soulmate. These things really happen, but most of the time we aren’t aware of them. In this instance I will allege that the soon to be couple is especially astonished by the fact that they chose seats that are next to each other. They aren’t consciously aware of all the other coincidences / synchronicities. For example the two don’t realize that the numbers of their seats coincide exactly with their age. But regardless of this fact, the two couldn’t possibly know that they’ve read the words “synchronized swimming” at the exact same time yesterday, one in a book, the other in an article. How would you judge the probability of that happening? I think that you will agree that it’s very probable not to come across “synchronized swimming” for a couple of months. Of course a computer would be able to calculate that in your city a certain percentage of people will read any given number of words at the exact same time. What a computer will not be able to calculate is the karmic connection of two specific people of this hypothetical statistic, as well as the significance of the words “synchronized swimming” as a soul trigger for the two beings, resulting in the (unconscious) decision to go to the movies and meeting their soulmate.
Fact is that the terms “coincidence” and “synchronicity” can’t really be separated. A chain of coincidences will only appear fully comprehensible and banal if they’re seen out of the context in which they are embedded. What’s more, oftentimes the frequency with which coincidences occur contradict their own definition in regard to their probability. And if that’s the case then “coincidence” just doesn’t cut it anymore as an explanation which is why the term “synchronicity” makes more sense.
How then to account for the aforementioned karmic context? I postulated that a trigger was needed for a karmic convergence. I’m wary of asserting that karma can be explained alone with synchronicities, but I will contend the train of thought that synchronicities could function as a karmic vehicle.
We live in a time where we are surrounded by data which is accessible by everyone like never before. And as such it is possible to determine synchronicities in a manner that hasn’t been possible in the past. Alone the amount of the various media opens the possibility for an accretion of synchronistic incidents.
The following is an approach to explain synchronicity as a principle of karma. Karma reduced to its essence is the cosmic law of causality, of action and reaction, or better the law of resonance of action and reaction. As simple as it sounds at first, what results is an infinitely vast web of factors in which this law can propagate through our reality.
In this infinitely vast factor matrix, which can’t be fathomed neither by us nor by any computer, each and everything, each life form, each incident has its designated place. If you take this cosmic view, then even the tiniest incidence will fit snugly into a canon of incidents that appear to be completely unrelated. Such an incident can only be differentiated by any other incident by the factor of the gradations of its synchronicities:
Synchronicity of a lower order = a singular coincidental unrelated incident
Synchronicity of a medium order = an incident with synchronistic relation
Synchronicity of a higher order = a chain of seemingly unrelated incidents
Synchronicity of the highest order = a chain of incidents with synchronistic relations
If you take my theory of synchronistic frequency propagation into account then it stands to reason that a great many people experience synchronicities of a higher order on a daily basis, which they are more or less aware of. Everyone knows the term “coincidence”, but very few know the term “synchronicity”.
A couple of years ago I began to notice a sudden increase of synchronistic events in my life. I thought to myself “these coincidences are much too strange. I have to write this down, so I don’t forget!” And that’s how my Synchronicity Biography and diary started.
Follow me and witness the strange synchronicities I experienced over the years!
