It was a fairly uneventful day. We traveled further in Saskatchewan until the rolling hills near Alberta - it's slogan being 'Wild Rose Country' - began. Alberta is also a beautiful place. Although it does have a bit of a 'redneck' reputation. Story time: I remember sitting somewhere in Small Town, Alberta. I think it was Swan Hills to be precise. My Bus wasn't coming in for another 35 hours. Somehow they had also forgotten my luggage, they said it was coming on the next bus. Otherwise I would have just hitchhiked the remaining 70 or so Kilometers to my destination. But I was stuck. I sat around, for hours on end not knowing what to do, I guess I was just going to sleep somewhere. As I sat there, I noticed a pickup truck. They would pull up to a stop sign, roll along. Fifteen minutes later, they did the same thing. It went on for hours it seems. "Is this what people do for entertainment here?" Thankfully, somehow I did have my tent and my sleeping bag on me, and some nice woman noticed me sitting there. She asked what was happening and offered me a spot on her lawn where I could pitch the tent and stay the night. At the time I was also a big pothead, and she happened to give me some weed nugs as well. Which ended up being a great bonus. When I finally arrived at my destination the next day, to some remote treeplanting camp, they seemed to be devoid of the green stuff and me arriving with a tiny bit seemed like a gift from god or something. I guess in a way, you could say it was. Although some would say it was a gift from Satan. Regardless, after seeing small town life in the middle of Alberta, I didn't think the city where I came from was so bad after all.
At the end of this day, we ended up in Calgary, Alberta. We stayed in a brightly lit Walmart parking lot. I always disliked staying in those parking lots because they were all so brightly lit and felt like a million miles away from nature. But they were handy places to stay in a pinch I suppose. My mom called her brother, my uncle who lives there in Calgary, but at the other end of town. It was sort of late so we said we would stop by on our way back out East, which never ended up happening because of a change in route. Regardless, the next day we would finally see the mountains we were questing for, something my parents had never seen, at least in Canada.
