IBM researchers have managed to build the most powerful quantum computer so far. That's a promising step towards a way to handle huge amounts of data.

A quantum computer does not work with bits, such as an ordinary computer, but with quantum bits or qubits. Unlike bits, which always represent 0 or 1, a qubit can be 0 and 1 at the same time. As a result, a quantum computer can perform countless calculations at the same time, thus analyzing super fast gigantic amounts of data.

Computer of the future

One day, these computers will be infinite times more powerful than today's computers. They will be able to solve problems that are far too complex for the current machines. And so, IBM, Google, Intel and Rigetti from Silicon Valley have been involved in an intense battle to be able to unpack their future computer.

IBM's announcement does not mean that quantum computers are now ready for general use. The system that the computer giant has developed is still very erratic and difficult to use - just like the systems of the competitors. The quantum state remains 90 microseconds. That's a record, but still a very short time.

Nevertheless, this is an important milestone in research into practical quantum computers. Other systems that have been built so far have limited capacities and can only do calculations that can also handle a conventional supercomputer.

IBM's investigation has not yet appeared, but was presented this morning at the Industry Summit on the Future of Computing in Washington.
IBM has already achieved many successes in the field of quantum computers. Thus, the company made quantum computers accessible through the cloud and developed the important software applications.
