There is a great deal of distrust still for AI with much of the public. People are nervous about adopting AI tools into their lives, even if they aren't aware that they might even be using them already. In general, people just don't trust AI and researchers have been trying to investigate and better understand why that is and how they might go about changing that.
Previous surveys have found just about 54 percent of consumers admit to using AI but that drastically decreased when asked how often they use it, to a little more than 20 percent, back in 2017.
Prevalence since then has grown but there is still a lot of skepticism around it, people are nervous about embracing it and there are legitimate concerns.
As far as why some people might be more willing to accept it than others, new research suggests that social connections might give us some more understanding.
More specifically, a new study shows that people's relationship styles can play a big part here. If they are anxious about forming new relationships with people in life then they are more likely to be nervous about trusting AI too.
“The findings show you can predict and increase people’s trust levels in non-humans based on their early relationships with humans,... This has the potential to improve adoption of new technologies and the integration of AI in the workplace.” - Gillath, prof of psych at KU.
If people can see that AI tool as a partner or something that is working along with them, sort of like a team member in their tribe etc, then they might be more willing to accept it and work with the device.
In the next few years until 2026 this is one market that is expected to continue growing to more than $200 billion. Despite the success already there is still a lot of room for growth as less than 50 percent of companies today are estimated to already be using artificial intelligence. Those numbers are for businesses around the U.S., according to a previous survey that involved 500 business and technology professionals. Worldwide estimates have placed it between 34 to 44 percent previously for companies that are currently using AI on a regular basis.
There are a variety of ways that you might already be using AI in your daily routine and not even know it yet.
It could be while you are using social media, or trying to unlock your phone with your facial identification, or it might be while you are using various editing programs. Do you ever use Google search? Or find yourself confronted with chatting with chatbots while looking for customer service? It might be while you are using your smart home devices, and there are many other places you can find it.
AI applications are helping banks to save hundreds of billions of dollars and said to be offering a variety of beneficial experiences to the user along with the implementation. There is still caution urged though for businesses that might be adopting these changes, suggestions that it should augment and work along with a human team for example, rather than outright replacing jobs and offering only a chatbot type of experience for a customer service experience altogether.
