Everyday people all around the world use Google News to stay abreast about the latest stories going on— from sports events to local news. Unfortunately, the design of the Google News page has been stuck in the past. To improve the service, Google announced today that an updated, Material Design version of Google News (web) will be rolling out over the next couple of days.
Utilizing Material Design, the new user interface has a clean, white card-based look that makes it easier to browse, quickly scan, and identify related articles about a particular story. Expanding a card will present similar articles and different perspectives, including "Opinion pieces," "Local Sources," and "Most Referenced." You can also click "View full coverage" and it will provide you with a full list of articles relating to particular news story so that you can become more "immersed." Key element such as publisher names, article labels, and images have also been updated so that they are large and more easy to read. Videos will also be better highlighted thanks to an improved algorithm, and the updated video player will now show related videos.
There's a new navigation drawer on the left that will house your favorite news topics (customizable) and a navigation bar below the search bar that will contain “Headlines,” “Local” and “For You” tabs. The "Local" tab can be customized to track stories from anywhere around the world that interest you (like your hometown), whereas the "For you" tab allows you to pinpoint niche interests and create your own mini news feed. On the other hand, the right side of the page features several widgets including a weather widget and an "In the news" widget. There's also a "Fact Check" widget that shows the top fact checked articles recently published (U.S only).
Finally, there is a new "Settings" page that will allow you to name your custom sections, edit existing sections, type in interests you want to see in the “For You” stream, and identify news sources that you want to see more (or less) of.
