Although many already know this wonder that Google Drive offers, there are still many people who are unaware of the existence of it. I have met more than one friend who does not know the option to save their files in the cloud and can download them anywhere, so I decided to share with you what is needed to start using this tool.

Technology has advanced a lot over the last decade, so much so that the way we communicate and use the different electronic devices has changed completely. To know a little about Google Drive, we must first know what the cloud is and how it benefits us to use it.

What is the cloud?

The cloud is a way of storage and transmission of data through the Internet, which allows to save the files of any person, in servers that are located around the world. This seeks to ensure that each person has access to their files where they are, only with the requirement of having access to the internet.

With this technology we can host our most important files on storage servers, so we will have access to them anywhere, there is the option of downloading them back to our device, or leaving them there and thus free physical storage space. This innovation offers us many advantages, since with it we will keep our most important data in a safe way, avoiding losing them in case our current equipment is damaged. In addition to this we have access to them without needing to have our personal device at hand, since by any device with internet access we can have them.

A clear example would be:

Imagine that you have a series of videos of your graduation stored in your computer, then you want to make a backup to avoid losing them, for this you enter a free storage server and upload all your videos there. Once you have finished uploading all those videos to the server, they will be safe in the cloud, that is, in case your computer is damaged or you accidentally delete your videos, they will still be available to you on the internet.

Now imagine that you go to your aunt's house and you want to show her the videos, but these are on your computer and you do not have it with you, because when you have them in the cloud, you can access them from your aunt's house, entering the server page, from any device with internet access. That way you can download them and see them with your family whenever you want.

Although this system is very useful, its only disadvantage is that without access to the web, you will not be able to access your files, for everything else it is an excellent option to store your data and access them wherever you want.

How do I save my files in the cloud?

To do this, we must register in one of the different storage servers in the cloud that offer us their services, but in this case I will focus on one that almost all of us have at our disposal, I mean Google Drive and just like its name it indicates, belongs to the company Google. We can obtain this service only by having a Gmail account, that is, an email with the ending "@gmail.com".

This is a storage system in the cloud, in which we can store all our files, images, documents, videos, music, among others. Google drive offers 15Gb of free storage, which can be extended by a payment. Although this system requires a payment method to expand its capacity, the free 15Gb it offers, are excellent for keeping all our most important files, in the case that we need to save much heavier files, we must choose to contract a plan of wider storage.

What do I need to have an account?

The primary requirement is to have an account created in Gmail, once we have it, we will have 15Gb of free space in the cloud to save what we want.

How do I upload the files to Drive?

There are different ways to do it, but this time I will explain the simplest one. This consists of entering the official website and log in with our email account.

• Once there we can upload our files from the computer by dragging them manually or by clicking on "New" and then the desired option (folder, file or whatever we want to upload).

• When you have finished uploading the file, we will have it saved in the cloud and we can access it through any computer.

We can accommodate our files as if it were a folder on our computer, since we are actually moving the files in a virtual folder, located on an external server.

Other advantages of Google Drive

• Allows you to view photos, videos and documents from the same browser, without having to download it.

• There is the option to create documents, spreadsheets, forms and presentations from the same cloud, without the need to have those programs installed on the computer.

• We can work in the same file or document from different parts at the same time, which facilitates group work.

• Being a Google service offers great security and backup of our files.

• You can save any type of files.

• Almost everyone uses it, so we can pass the files we want to our friends anywhere in the world.

Google Drive gives us the opportunity to obtain a good storage capacity for free in the cloud, in addition to being able to expand it, obtaining a plan, which is not too expensive, for the benefits it offers.

If we want to save our files in a safe and reliable way, Google Drive is a great option, through it we can manage and organize in an excellent way each of our documents.
