In this article I included some of the less known things about Linux.
In December 1992, Linus Torvalds's creation was released under the GNU GPL license as the first Linux operating system, giving rise to versions subsequently taken over by other research and personalized centers (Debian, Slackware). This has turned into the most popular free operating system a project that only started as a hobby, of a young man who wanted to go beyond the hardware limitations of existing hardware at that time.
However, there are a lot of things less known about Linux today. The following are just some of the most interesting ones.
The operating system has had a huge expansion
Over the years, Linux has experienced tremendous expansion. Given that the number of code lines used is of the order of millions, you should know that only 2% of them were written by Linus Torvalds. The rest have been added over the years.
The first Linux kernel was only 65 kilobytes
In the early 1990s, Minix could not take advantage of all the benefits of the new 32-bit Intel processor, and a Unix operating system for the 386 was too expensive for average users. For this reason, Linus Torvalds began a project that would lead to the launch of one of the most popular operating systems in history. Thus, the first kernel created by the Finnish was not an extremely demanding one, occupying only 65 KB.
Linux has over 19 million lines of code
As I said before, Linux has become more and more complex, with many elements being added over time. Today, the operating system would have about 19.5 million lines of code, as the previous version was about 18 million. On average, 7.71 enhancements are accepted in Linux every hour, which would mean about 1,300 changes per week.
Linux dominates Wall Street
In 2007, a major change took place on Wall Street, but not many people paid attention to it. That year, the New York Stock Exchange dropped out of the Unix operating system, opting instead for Linux. Apparently, the Bursa has made such a decision in order to benefit from the latest technology in a shorter time.
Companies like Google, Facebook or Amazon use Linux
When it comes to web and cloud services, some of today's most important companies, like Google, Facebook or Amazon, rely on Linux.
Linux also controls the particle accelerator in Switzerland
According to Wikipedia, the Enterprise Enterprise Operating System (CentOS) is a free and free GNU / Linux operating system based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux from Red Hat. Some of the main reasons why Linux is so popular are the low cost and scalability of the system. The latter would represent its ability to properly support a higher load volume, or to allow it to be enlarged or expanded.
Android is based on Linux
Android, the operating system of Google, is based on the Linux kernel, originally developed by Google, and later by the Open Handset Alliance consortium. The latter came to public attention on November 5, 2007, including at that time Google, HTC, Intel, Motorola, Qualcomm, T-Mobile, Sprint Nextel and Nvidia, and aimed at developing open standards for mobile devices. The special effects of Avatar and Titanic, two of the most successful movies in the history of cinema, have been created with the help of Linux applications. Weta Digital, the Avatar and Avatar developer, even used one of the world's most powerful supercomputers all the time.
