It seems like just yesterday that Elon Musk unveiled to the world his much anticipated Neuralink technology. If you have been living under the rock and don't know what it is, basically, he wants to merge the human brain with computers to give it a "digital layer".
The reason he wants to do this is simple. Well, simple in Musk terms anyway. He believes that one day, artificial intelligence (AI) will become a lot smarter. Smarter than a human being. And that is when our survival may be put into question.
Although experts hotly debate whether or not that can even happen, I guess, it doesn't hurt to prepare for it in case it happens! That's what Elon Musk is doing with Neuralink. He's following the "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" strategy and wants us to merge with AI to survive.
In July of last year, he showed to the world, for the first time ever, the Neuralink technology which entails shooting holes in your skull with a laser and using flexible threads of electrodes to sort of give the brain a digital capability.
Next Gen Already?
As if that wasn't enough to blow your minds already, he is already hyping the next generation of Neuralink technology, merely 9 months after the first unveil! He recently tweeted that Neuralink, the startup, is working on an "awesome new version" of the technology.
He also said that it will be installed in a human this year. This should be interesting as it would showcase the real-world applications as well as how humans adapt to this technology. According to what was reported last year, it might take some time for a human to adapt to this digital layer.
Even writing this down seems bizarre and feels like we are living in 2050 or something. It really is the future and science fiction does come to reality sooner than you expect!
Musk even claims that a more advanced version of this technology could cure autism and schizophrenia! If this happens, he will be instantly regarded as a genius. Well, more than he already is!
