Immer wieder steht der Messenger WhatsApp in der Kritik. Zwar ist die Kommunikation inzwischen tatsächlich Ende-zu-Ende verschlüsselt, allerdings gibt es immer noch einige Punkte, die aktuell kritisiert werden dürfen:
Die App gleicht das Adressbuch seines Besitzers automatisch mit der eigenen Datenbank ab, um Kontakte anzeigen zu können, die ebenfalls WhatsApp benutzen. Bei diesem Vorgang werden also Millionen von Telefonnummern an die WhatsApp-Server übertragen, ohne dass die Inhaber dieser Telefonnummern dem zugestimmt hätten. Dies erklärte das (Deutsche) Amtsgericht Bad Hersfeld in seinem Beschluss vom 20.03.2017 mit Az. F 111/17 EASO für unzulässig. Problem dabei: WhatsApp wälzt die Verantwortung für die Übermittlung des Telefonbuchs auf den Anwender ab. Etliche Medien spekulierten daher in den letzten Tagen darüber, ob nun Massenabmahnungen drohen. Das Paradoxe daran ist aber: Diejenigen, die einen WhatsApp-Anwender abmahnen würden, nutzen WhatsApp selbst und haben denselben AGB zugestimmt. Diejenigen, die kein WhatsApp nutzen, wissen zunächst nichts davon, dass ihre Telefonnummer an WhatsApp weitergegeben wurde. Abmahnungen sind also unwahrscheinlich.
WhatsApp gehört zu facebook, und dass facebook alle Daten sammelt und auswertet, die es bekommen kann, ist bekannt. Das Geschäftsmodell von facebook ist es, Nutzerdaten zu sammeln, auszuwerten und für seine (Werbe-) Zwecke zu nutzen. Es würde mich auch nicht wundern, wenn dabei neben den sozialen Profilen auch Netzwerke abgebildet werden (wer kennt wen und wer kommuniziert mit wem) und hin und wieder auch Daten an Geheimdienste abfließen. Ganz sicher kann facebook zuordnen, welcher facebook-Benutzer zu welchem WhatsApp-Konto gehört – und umgekehrt. Facebook mag das abstreiten, aber ich gehe davon aus, dass das eine Lüge ist.
Anstatt die Kritik nun weiter zu vertiefen, möchte ich euch einige Alternativen zu WhatsApp vorstellen. Dabei werden auch Exoten genannt.
Threema
Neben der Ende-zu-Ende Verschlüsselung fällt auf, dass sich Threema auch anonym nutzen lässt. Es wird eine ID generiert; die Angabe einer Handynummer oder Mail-Adresse ist optional. Metadaten werden so gut es geht vermieden. Kontakte können mittels QR-Code verifiziert werden. „Threema ist ein 100% unabhängiges und eigenfinanziertes Schweizer Unternehmen [...]. Server und Software-Entwicklung befinden sich ausschließlich in der Schweiz und unterstehen den strengen Schweizer Datenschutzgesetzen.“ Kritik: Der Quelltext ist nicht öffentlich, Sicherheitsaudits kaum möglich. Signal
Neben der Ende-zu-Ende Verschlüsselung hat Signal eine Archiv-Funktion und bietet kostenlose Anrufe. Das Entwicklerteam wird durch Spenden und andere Zuwendungen bezahlt. Edward Snowden empfiehlt Signal. | https://whispersystems.org
Wire
Vielfältig verfügbar für iOS, Android, Windows Desktop, Mac, Linux, und als Web-Oberfläche, leider offenbar nicht für Windows Phone. Es bietet vollständige Ende-zu-Ende Verschlüsselung, ist Open Source (Code auf Github) und unabhängig geprüft. Die schweizer Firma hostet ausschließlich in der EU. Ein Hochladen der Kontakte ist nicht nötig, eine Telefonnummer ebenso wenig. Funktionen wie die Suche innerhalb von Nachrichten, Sprach- und Video-Anrufe und Gruppenunterhaltungen machen die App wirklich interessant. | https://wire.com/de/
Telegram
Telegram ist kostenlos und erhältlich für Android, iPhone und iPad, Windows Phone sowie PC, MAC und Linux. Ebenso steht eine Web-Oberfläche bereit. Telegram behauptet, Nachrichten schneller als jede andere App zuzustellen. Zwischen verschiedenen Geräten kann synchronisiert werden, da es cloud-basiert läuft. Die Server sind weltweit verstreut. Wie bei anderen Messengern kann man auch bei Telegram Nachrichten mit einem Zeitpunkt zur Selbstzerstörung senden. Gruppenchats können bis zu 10.000 Teilnehmer haben. | https://telegram.org
Wickr
Neben Ende-zu-Ende Verschlüsselung fällt bei Wickr auf, dass es sich durch seine sicheren Räume für Teams und Projekte und Dateitransfers von bis zu 5 GB pro Datei vorwiegend für die geschäftliche Nutzung eignet. Der Personal Messenger ist erhältlich für Windows Desktop, Mac, und Linux 32/64 Bit. | https://www.wickr.com
Surespot
Auch hier ist die Ende-zu-Ende Verschlüsselung (256-Bit-AES-GCM) eingebaut. Surespot ist Open Source. Es wird keine Verbindung zwischen Surespot und Telefonnummer oder E-Mail vorgenommen; eine anonyme Nutzung ist möglich. Auf einem Gerät können mehrere Identitäten verwaltet werden, die auch übertragbar auf andere Geräte sind. | https://www.surespot.me
Dies ist nur eine Auswahl an Messengern. Außerdem fand ich noch folgende: KakaoTalk, Hike, Google Hangout, Google Allo, Line, WeChat, VIPole, Riot, Sid, Ciffry, TrustCase, Jongla, myEnigma, Slack, SIMSme, Viber, ChatON.
Selbstverständlich ist diese Übersicht nicht vollständig. Die Auswahl an Messengern ist zahlreich und die Wahl leider trotzdem sehr eingeschränkt. Denn meist fehlt es ja an Freunden und Bekannten, die eine WhatsApp-Alternative nutzen. Die besten Erfahrungen habe ich mit Threema und Telegram gemacht. Nutzt ihr neben WhatsApp noch einen oder mehrere andere Messenger? Ich freue mich auf Kommentare.
Again and again the messenger WhatsApp gets criticism. Although the communication is now actually end-to-end encrypted, however there are still some points, which may currently be criticized:
The app automatically matches the owner's address book with its own database to display contacts that also use WhatsApp. In this process, millions of telephone numbers are transferred to the WhatsApp servers without the owners of these phone numbers having agreed to this. This was declared unlawful by the (German) Amtsgericht Bad Hersfeld in its decision of 20.03.2017 with sheet F 111/17 EASO. The problem: WhatsApp rolls the responsibility for the transmission of the telephone book to the user. In recent days, many media speculated about the threat of mass dissuasions. The paradox of this is, that WhatsApp users would take advantage of WhatsApp themselves and have agreed to the same terms and conditions. Those who do not use WhatsApp do not know that their phone number has been transfered to WhatsApp. Dissuasions are therefore unlikely to come.
WhatsApp belongs to facebook, and it is well known that facebook collects and evaluates all the data it can get. The business model of facebook is to gather, evaluate and use user data for its (advertising) purposes. I would not be surprised if, in addition to the social profiles, networks are depicted (who knows who and who communicates with whom about what) and sometimes data goes to secret services. Certainly, I am sure facebook can assign which facebook user belongs to which WhatsApp account – and vice versa. They may state they don‘t do so, but I just guess they are lying.
Instead of deepening the criticism, I would like to introduce some alternatives to WhatsApp to you. Exotics are also mentioned.
Threema
In addition to the end-to-end encryption, it is noticeable that Threema can also be used anonymously. An ID is generated; the indication of a mobile number or e-mail address is optional. Metadata is avoided as much as possible. Contacts can be verified by QR code. „Threema is a 100% independent and self-financed Swiss company [...]. Server and software development are exclusively in Switzerland and are subject to the strict Swiss data protection laws.“ Criticism: The source text is not public, security audits are hardly possible. Signal

Wire
Versatile available for iOS, Android, Windows desktop, Mac, Linux, and as a web interface, unfortunately, apparently not for Windows Phone. It provides full end-to-end encryption, open source (code on github), and is independently tested. The Swiss company hosts exclusively in the EU. An upload of the contacts is not necessary, a telephone number neither. Telegram
Telegram is free and available for Android, iPhone and iPad, Windows Phone as well as PC, MAC and Linux. A web interface is also available. Telegram claims to deliver messages faster than any other app. You can synchronize between different devices as it runs cloud-based. The servers are scattered around the world. As with other messengers, you can also send telegram messages with a time to self-destruction. Groupchats can have up to 10,000 participants. | https://telegram.org

Surespot
End-to-end encryption (256-bit AES-GCM) is also installed here. Surespot is open source. No connection is made between surespot and your telephone number or e-mail; anonymous use is possible. This overview is incomplete. The selection of messengers is numerous but the choice is nevertheless very limited. Because usually it is missing friends and acquaintances who use a WhatsApp alternative. The best experiences I have made are with Threema and Telegram.
