If you haven’t watched the psychological drama/comedy show Maniac yet, I urge you to get yourself in front of Netflix, and start streaming this wonderful show. The show is densely detailed, beautiful, and compelling. We binge watched the short limited series 10 episodes in a matter of days. And if you have watched Maniac, then I urge you to give it a second watch; the show’s self-referential nature leads to many interesting details you may have failed to notice upon first viewing.
Maniac is directed by the talented Cary Joji Fukunaga, director of True Detective’s acclaimed season 1. Starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill; one a hopeless addict tormented by her past, the other a chronically depressed man with schizophrenia. Both enter in to a mind bending drug trial that aims to cure them of their emotional pains. The ensuing journey is a delicately layered masterpiece, surreal and poignant.
I have yet to encounter someone who disliked Maniac, so if you are in search of a good show to watch, Maniac won’t let you down. Even if you are not a fan of the plot, the show is so beautifully crafted and enjoyable to watch. I have included the trailer below to further tickle your fancy:
