It seems like every time that I go see a show at Sight & Sound Theater in Ronks, Pennsylvania, I claim that it was the best show I've seen there. The same was true when I went to see "David," but I really believe that they outdid themselves this time. Don't get me wrong. I have never seen a bad show here! I think it is really exciting when you think you know the whole Bible story and then you realize that you don't.
First off, the vocal prowess and harp playing of the actor who played David was outstanding. You are never presented with a cast list because from what I understand they want to keep the shows focused on the true star, which is God or Jesus Christ. The utilization of three stages never fails to boggle my mind. It is always fun to see the live animals involved, including horses, sheep, goats, llamas and birds.
Some of the music for this show reminded me of a rock opera, with a touch of ethnic rhythms. The use of film mixed in with their elaborate sets worked perfectly with the storytelling. David was smaller than his brothers and the many soldiers. Yet, he was very brave because he knew that he had God on his side. He claimed to never have wanted the throne, but it was his destiny to become king. As with the previous king, the crown changed David's personality and turned him into a person he didn't even recognize.
Munching on my usual Roasted Almonds, I thought the show went to a new level when the cave scenery was revealed, complete with fires burning. Then, the first giant (Goliath) appeared! The puppetry was amazing. Later on in the show, four more Giants appeared which were Goliath's brothers. I loved the relationship between David and his band of outcasts that fought alongside him. Even more so, I loved how they developed a relationship with God. I am definitely going to try and make it back there next year to see "Moses."
