the destination, coney island. the people, a couple, two lobsters who found their way back to the shore to share and connect together two time lines out of sync across big oceans. the boy, obsessed with america since a teen bought up on american shows and computing films, films like the warriors and tv series having profound effect on the yearning to visit coney, the messaging, the carrier wave of information in both bits of content, decades apart, but always about people, always about communities, always about connection and expression — to understand what i’m saying watch the warriors film (original) and season one of mr robot. you’ll get what i mean.
during our trip away as the squad of teamhumble.org we managed to fit in a day where we took time out, we got on the subway that went out of the city and followed a line till the end of the line, like a time less forgotten, like a secret place, like the train stop in matrix 2, yet we were the train master, we had paid our ticket to ride because the glow of kinship was surrounding us like a halo that we had somehow connected the timelines back together, i felt excited, like a bucket list item was just about to be realised.
i’ve carried the yearning to go to coney for a long time, well over a decade or more, it seems fitting that such a place exists at the end of a line, the last stop, the place where you start or end at, the beach, a short walk away overlooking the north atlantic, the home of the North Atlantic garbage patch - Wikipedia the out of sight and out of mind floating mass of water between our land masses in which i flew in a big cylinder tube to reach here to spend that time in true time lord fashion while the tardis was in for intergalactic repair, it seems a waste of time but sometimes you take the time to understand the time involved. the time is where the legacy is manifested you see. if you spent that time, you would understand that, because even when you cash out time, you always get it back when your a time lord, nothing is truly ever spent, just observed.
for the mr robot fanboys, yes. that’s the place where they filmed at least the outside shots in season one of the building that they all did they supposed hacks from, it was nice to link the area, the beach where the warriors had their final show down and the mr robot series together in harmony
make the flashback worth it
i never really questioned why the warriors impacted me so much, maybe it was the rebellion in me, the idea of this gang of kids that believed in an identity so much, the idea of sections, nodes, areas, the outreach of needing to find a voice on the sides of spraying on the subway trains to define gangs in areas (oh the irony of them used in the reefs now submerged for marine life!) — the cross over from a 70’s funkadelic vibe to a newer more organised and together future, the phasing in of the 80’s and how each decade brings about a sharp curve to the notion of progress for people clinging onto an identity they believed once fit them.
fast forward to today where the gangs are virtual, where we have the displaced and anxiety, stressed, time suppressed internal mind travellers like elliot from mr robot. the people have changed, the places the same, the message is still the fight, the characters change but the fight is always for the same thing, to maintain some kind of identity in a world designed to erase history in return for the next moment in the pursuit of progress.
we can choose to be sheep like in these cycles, to follow along, to bah when other bah, to not stand out like the black sheep we might be and to conform to the norm, not rocking the boat, not creating those life lesson waves that hit the shore eventually (that’s why timecards need to visit shores a lot, they need to hear the final version as they created the first wave to see how distorted the journey got) when it reaches it’s destination, be it land mass or the next human willing to listen in and process.
you see, being a timelord is about crafting moments where you were present and correct, in sync, manipulated what feels like time and space, forced a future version of yourself in that scene, placed yourself in that parallel universe at some point to validate the message, that you received it, that you processed it, that in some way at some point in time you’ll do the right thing to influence it and carry that undistorted message on. it’s the only way true legacy can ever be written, we all have a carrier wave to share.
reflection is not an underline

being tasked with time lord duties is never easy. you always trying to fill in the blanks, when the duplication and overlays of time get’s out of sync, events in in time space and those ruddy black holes causing all kinds of temporal damage it can be easy to believe you’ve not been there before. heck, everything can feel like the first time if you convince yourself enough, sometimes we crave it because it all seems very ordinary if we don’t. like the first kiss, the first time you sat behind a steering wheel, the time your child arrived into the world in a time altering quiet fearful period before the child found her voice and cried out about entering this realm.
it’s not merely enough to reflect on a time when it was, it’s not enough to just cement a moment to memory as done, you can push the very outer core of the time you are in and want to be in, we time travel all the time in our dreams, we feel the very real heat on our skin and in our minds eye of what seems so right, so perfect, so liberating. why be frustrated about the linear path you are taking. you have decided that the current path is enough, you wear that top and those trousers or those shoes because of the character you want to perceive yourself to be.
when you catch the mirror image of yourself walking past a window and see the worlds reflection looking back at you how do you know that’s from that time period you think you are in or your simply stopping to get back in sync with the other universes that are broadcast backwards, how would you define something that was alien in a world made up of magic and mayhem already — breaking the chain of your linear life is always under your control and taking time to reflect on what it means doesn’t mean that you have to sign off on anything, it could be today, next month, in ten years. you can always come back to any place in time if you give yourself time to stop.
you are the storage medium
since day zero you had everything you needed to make the journey, that little bag of grey matter up there, the ultimate time travelling organism, the one that just needs a liner of water in a sack to keep it processing and send messages flying around to the many physical receptors we have as the human body. it’s an amazing thing really, a true incredible alien invention, and look what’s it achieved, created and destroyed, re-calibrated and enhanced. we are walking box of delights, a kaleidoscope of moments, memories and reminders.
when the replay moment comes i know that i have filled my storage medium with moments that i can play back at full speed, see the moment where i pushed through and connected the dots. that’s all we can really ask while we are here on planet earth interacting with our fellow humans right? do the right thing, engage where you can engage, give compassion to those that give compassion back and be about our way. remove the drama, side step and say ‘thank you, but no thanks’ to the things that are just part of the distraction economy and invest more time in time travelling to the places that make us a better person for the ones that share our love.
