I have noticed while I have been here in the Dominican Republic, quite a few large abandoned buildings on plots of land where I would imagine the owners had grand ideas of a prosperous tourism economy. A large portion of this country is dedicated towards tourism, so it is easy to understand how everyone would like in on the action. Not everyone can succeed though and (sadly) it is normally the little guys with small businesses that get crushed - but it was really surprising and a bit scary to encounter an absolutely massive resort that had been shut down and abandoned.

I do not know what the name of this place was at one point, but the area that it is in seems to be a part of this country that was popular at one point and then people over-developed. Now, most of the businesses just look sad and most are shut. I would imagine it is difficult to make an area look great when there is a giant looming complex of failure in sight of everything that remains.

there were dozens of buildings like this one, all part of the same resort

one of the many swimming pool areas I found

this gives a good idea about how many rooms are here

spooky-this was once a bustling area i'm sure
I didn't wander around much more because there were lots of territorial dogs and I had also attracted the attention of some squatters who had taken up residence here. I didn't want any trouble with either group so i returned to my car.
I would imagine that the owners gave up on trying to sell this place quite some time ago. I can't imagine how much work would need to be done in order to restore it and i suppose there would be no reason to try seeing as how the bungalow operations nearby don't have any guests anyway.
I wish i could have taken more pictures because this place was absolutely massive and also oceanfront. Seeing this place made me think of that zombie island game where the hotel has been overrun (someone help me out here) or of what every business will look like after the apocalypse. It also appears as though someone is doing some level of gardening. I have heard rumors that property owners will allow squatters to stay for free provided they maintain the grounds. Perhaps that is what is happening here.
I like this sort of stuff nearly as much as the natural beauty it was likely built to admire in the first place.
