Cinque Terre means "five lands" referring to five tiny picture-postcard coastal villages on the Ligurian Sea (UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997). When we approached the first village we couldn´t believe our eyes! A picture-perfect coastal town perfectly tucked within one of the world´s most dramatic natural scenery - rough stone cliffs, the glittering sea and man-made terraced-vineyards. It´s more than amazing what the inhabitants were able to accomplish here over the centuries. AN OCEAN OF COLORS. Once you´ve been there, you´ll want to come back! There is hardly any other Italian region that casts its spell over so many visitors. Even though all villages were packed full of tourists after 9am, it did not dampen our mood. The region is beyond beautiful & you´ll definitely find a place to enjoy the atmosphere. However, we highly recommend to explore the region in the early morning hours, BEFORE all other tourists arrive by boat & bus.
For many centuries these tiny little "cities" could only be reached by sea. That´s why we set off, ON FOOT, following the trail through each village, one foot at a time, hiking our way up to the top of the mountains. Exploring the region´s beauty, gazing in awe at panoramic views of Cinque Terre as we pass through lush green vineyards.
As Goethe once said: "You´ve not really been there until you´ve set FOOT there."
Oh & that´s so so true - we´ve never sweat this much before in our entire life. The feeling you get when you think that you finally reached the top, only to realize that another steep climb awaits you once again around the corner. YES, THE STRUGGLE IS REAL! Then just when you are thinking to give up, when your heart is beating fast & hard as if to burst through your chest and your hands are shaking, trying to grab another water bottle...this is when you finally will be rewarded with one of the most beautiful stretches of coast along the Mediterranean Sea. There´s no better reward!
The one who hikes, clears the mind, gets still, let go of thoughts & daily pressure, relaxes...the one who hikes, LIVES!
AND at the end of the trail, in the very last village, you get yourself a perfectly fresh lemon basil ice cream & sit down in a quiet corner, enjoying it all, when finally the struggle of a summer hike during high season in Italy let you forget about all the other tourists around. THIS IS WHEN you experience the true Cinque Terre & how it must have been many years ago. You see the fisher coming back home early in the morning with his catch of the night, the market women opening their windows to welcome a new day, sea gulls flying circles in the sky & the church bell ringing, saying:
"IT´S A NEW MORNING AND IT´LL BE GOOD !"
All you gotta do is open your eyes.

Die Cinque Terre (übersetzt "Fünf Ortschaften") besteht, wie der Name schon andeuten lässt, aus fünf Dörfern, welche 97 zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe erklärt worden sind. Es ist verblüffend, was Menschenhand hier geschaffen hat, wie sich die Bauschaften & die Landwirtschaft der Bauern in das Gesamtbild der Region eingebettet haben. Ein Meer von Farben abgerundet im grün der Weinberge & blau des Meeres. Einmal in Cinque Terre gewesen, kann man sich nur schwer dem Bann dieser Gegend entziehen. Da können selbst die Massen an Touristen, die hier tagtäglich Punkt 9Uhr über Land & Meer anreisen, nichts dran ändern. Allerdings ist es empfehlenswert in den frühen Morgenstunden diese Region zu erkunden. Nicht nur wegen der Touristenbusse, sondern auch um der Hitze wenigstens ein bisschen zu entgehen, zumindestens in der Hauptsaison.
Mehrere Jahrhunderte waren diese malerischen "Städtchen" nur zu Fuß oder über das Meer erreichbar. Also machen auch wir uns auf, ZU FUß! Gehen von Ortschaft zu Ortschaft, über Stock & Stein und vor allem die Weinberge hoch. Denn wie wusste schon seinerzeit Goethe: "NUR WO DU ZU FUß WARST, BIST DU AUCH WIRKLICH GEWESEN."
Oh und wie wir gewesen sind - noch nie haben wir so viel Wasser/Schweiß verloren, wie auf den Wegen über die Weinberge. Das Gefühl, wenn du denkst, dass du endlich "oben" angekommen bist & hinter der nächsten Ecke dann aber der nächste Aufstieg lauert, ist einfach Schweißtreibend. UND dann, wenn du denkst, es geht nicht mehr, wenn dir dein Herz durch die Brust schießen möchte, deine Hände zitternd nach der nächsten Wasserflasche im Schatten greifen, wirst du mit dem Ausblick aufs nächste Dorf einfach mal sowas von weggeflasht. Eine schönere Belohnung gibt es nicht! Wer wandert, der bekommt den Kopf frei, lässt seine Gedanken los, DER LEBT!
UND am Ende deines Weges, wenn du dich im letzten Dorf, mit einem frischen Zitronen-Basilikum-Eis in eine Ecke hockst & dich die Anstrengung, die ganzen anderen Touristen vergessen lässt, JA DANN, dann siehst du das wahre Cinque Terre & wie es vor langer Zeit hier einmal gewesen sein muss. Du siehst die Fischer, die morgens mit ihrer Beute heimkehren, die Marktfrauen, die ihre Fensterläden aufklappen, um den Tag zu begrüßen, die Möwen, die über den Himmel kreisen & du hörst die Kirchglocke erklingen, die da sagt: "ES IST EIN NEUER MORGEN UND ER WIRD GUT!"
Du musst nur hinsehen.
