If I think back to my days in Marrakech and all the beautiful things I have seen there is one area in particular in the city that struck me and that remained in my heart: the Medina.
First of all, you need to know that the Medina is the central and oldest part of a city.
It can be found in many North African cities and is mainly characterized by narrow alleys, dilapidated houses, mosques, ancient buildings and markets that sell all kinds of articles, food, clothes, bags, shoes, leather goods, spices, etc.
An absolutely essential place for those who, like me, love to get lost among banquets of food and various goods by bargaining with the seller on duty.

Se ripenso ai miei giorni passati a Marrakech e a tutte le bellissime cose che ho avuto la fortuna di vedere c'è una zona in particolare della città che mi ha colpito e che mi è rimasta nel cuore: la Medina.
Innanzitutto bisogna sapere che la Medina è la zona centrale e più antica di una città.
La si può trovare in molte città Nord africane ed è principalmente caratterizzata da vicoli stretti, abitazioni fatiscenti, moschee, palazzi antichi e mercati che vendono qualunque genere di articolo, cibo, vestiti, borse, scarpe, oggetti di pelle, spezie, ecc.
Un posto assolutamente imprescindibile per chi, come me, ama perdersi tra banchetti di cibo e merce varia contrattando con il venditore di turno.

The Medina of Marrakech is even more suggestive as it develops on the sides of the Jamaa el Fna square, the main square of the city.
Jamaa Square el Fna is rightly considered the vital center of the whole city and for this reason it has also been recognized by UNESCO as an oral and intangible heritage of humanity.
By entering this square and strolling for a few minutes you can in fact breathe the true essence of Moroccan culture. Here you can find a concentration of traditional activities which, despite the constant increase of tourism and the pressures of economic development, have managed to preserve their authenticity and originality over time.
Snake charmers, storytellers, stalls selling food and delicious orange juices, in this square from morning until late evening there is a continuous succession of incessant activities, buzz and people who move without a specific destination but for the sole pleasure of spend a few minutes in this amazing square.

La Medina di Marrakech è ancora più suggestiva in quanto si sviluppa ai lati della piazza Jamaa el Fna, la piazza principale della città.
Piazza Jamaa el Fna è considerata, a ragione, il centro vitale di tutta la città e per questo motivo è stata anche riconosciuta dall'UNESCO come patrimonio orale e immateriale dell'umanità.
Entrando in questa piazza e passeggiandoci per qualche minuto si può infatti respirare la vera essenza della cultura marocchina. Qui vi si può trovare infatti una concentrazione di attività tradizionali che, nonostante l'incessante aumento del turismo e le pressioni dello sviluppo economico, sono riuscite a conservare nel tempo lo loro autenticità e originalità.
Incantatori di serpenti, cantastorie, bancarelle che vendono cibo e buonissime spremute d'arancia, in questa piazza dalla mattina fino a tarda sera è un continuo susseguirsi di attività incessanti, brusio e gente che si sposta senza una meta precisa ma per il solo piacere di passare qualche minuto in questa stupefacente piazza.

Obviously this place also has its downsides.
Traveling, in fact, I learned that not everything is always positive and that, in order to help other travelers, it is right to report what is objectively negative or which left me with an unpleasant feeling.
In this case I can say that I found two things in particular that left me a little disappointed.
First of all, there are shows in the square which are used to entertain the inhabitants and tourists. Some animals are also used, including snakes and monkeys. Needless to say, these animals are not treated in the best way, indeed very often I found myself having to look away from some scenes that were too heavy for me. This is certainly due to a different cultural sensitivity regarding animal rights, for this reason I did not feel like judging these people but at the same time I was not comfortable in these situations.
The second negative side I experienced on my skin: attracted by the street food stalls that displayed large quantities of food I stopped to eat at one of these. I can't say I ate badly, indeed at the end of the meal I was very satisfied. A little less when they brought me the bill: let's say that eating in Jamaa el Fna square costs at least double if not triple that eating in any other restaurant in all of Marrakech. In short, avoid stopping eating directly in the square, just move a few meters and the quality of the food will be equally satisfactory and the bill much less salty!

Ovviamente anche questo luogo ha i suoi lati negativi. Viaggiando ho infatti imparato che non tutto è sempre positivo e che, per aiutare gli altri viaggiatori, è giusto riportare anche ciò che oggettivamente è negativo o che mi ha lasciato un sensazione spiacevole.
In questo caso posso dire di aver trovato due cose in particolare che mi hanno un po' delusa.
Per prima cosa nella piazza si tengono degli spettacoli che servono per intrattenere gli abitanti e i turisti dove vengono utilizzati anche alcuni animali, tra cui serpenti e scimmie. Inutile dire che questi animali non vengono trattati nel migliore dei modi, anzi molto spesso mi sono trovata a dover distogliere lo sguardo da alcune scene per me troppo pesanti. Ciò è sicuramente dovuto ad una diversa sensibilità culturale riguardo i diritti degli animali, per questo motivo non mi sono sentita di giudicare queste persone ma al contempo non mi sono trovata a mio agio in queste situazioni.
Il secondo lato negativo l'ho sperimentato sulla mia pelle: attratta dalle bancarelle di street food che esponevano grandi quantità di cibo mi sono fermata a mangiare ad una di queste. Non posso dire di aver mangiato male, anzi alla fine del pasto ero molto soddisfatta. Un po' meno quando mi hanno portato il conto: diciamo che mangiare in piazza Jamaa el Fna costa almeno il doppio se non il triplo che mangiare in un altro qualsiasi ristorante di tutta Marrakech. Insomma evitate di fermarvi mangiare direttamente in piazza, basta spostarsi di qualche metro e la qualità del cibo sarà ugualmente soddisfacente e il conto molto meno salato!

Despite these two things, as I said, I loved this part of the city madly.
I loved watching people frantically wandering the alleys of the medina and the square intent on reaching who knows what destination or busy in who knows what commission.
I loved to bargain with the sellers of the Medina, although initially they may seem a little insistent in the end you just need to know how to take them to fully enjoy this experience.
I loved stopping on the terrace of one of the countless cafes surrounding the square, having a tea while waiting to see the sun setting over Jamaal El Fna.
The Medina of Marrakech is a magical place that must be seen at least once in a lifetime.

Nonostante queste due cose, come ho già detto, ho amato alla follia questa parte della città.
Ho adorato osservare la gente che con frenesia si aggirava per i vicoli della medina e per la piazza intenta a raggiungere chissà quale meta o affaccendata in chissà quale commissione.
Ho amato contrattare con i venditori della Medina, anche se inizialmente possono sembrare un po' insistenti alla fine basta sapere come prenderli per godere appieno anche di questa esperienza.
Ho amato fermarmi sulla terrazza di uno degli innumerevoli caffè che circondano la piazza, bevendo un tea in attesa di vedere il sole tramontare su Jamaal El Fna.
La Medina di Marrakech è un posto magico che va visto almeno una volta nella vita.
