Welcome to my Travel Tip series where I promote some of the most beautiful places, interesting landmarks and impressive architectural sites of my homeland, the Czech Republic.
Today, I will show you a place that is extremely popular among domestic tourists (yet relatively unknown to foreign visitors), the famous Macha Lake.

Located in the Liberec Region in the northern part of the country, the Macha Lake is technically not a lake but a large pond with a total surface area of staggering 284 ha. The pond was created as early as in 1366, originally as a place for breeding and keeping fish.
These days, the Macha Lake has mainly been serving as a very popular recreation area that attracts tens of thousands of mostly domestic tourists every year. Visitors can choose from a wide range of accommodation facilities such as hotels, hostels, wooden bunks and camps.

The lake provides excellent conditions for all kinds of water sports such as kayaking, paddle boating, surfing etc. Hiking enthusiasts will surely appreciate the picturesque natural surrounding of the lake which is covered with numerous hiking trails. Some of them also lead to the ruins of the majestic Gothic castle of Bezdez that is located just a few kilometers away.
