One thing that has become obvious me as a spectator of the impeachment trial is how utterly incompetent those people are.
Several of the fence-sitting Republicans are coming out with statements leaning heavily into the idea that a vote for conviction would mean "removing Trump from the ballot" in the 2020 election.
This is -not- accurate. Removal from office is automatic upon conviction but disqualification from future office is optional and would require a separate vote.
This is how impeached and convicted judge Alcee Hastings sits today as an elected member of the House. Rarely has the Senate disqualified those it has convicted.
It's a moot point of course, but if they wanted to, the Senate could convict Trump and thus remove him from office, but decline to disqualify him so he'd still be eligible to run in this year's election. As a theoretical option that maybe even has some merit to it, though obviously won't happen.
