watch twitch streams lagfree, without your browser! :)
quicklinks | url to streamlink and the streamlink gui
So unless you’ve been living under a rock for the majority of your life you'll know about twitch.tv and the live streaming gamers platform. Most of us probably watch it through our browser with all of it's bloat ware and extensions we thought were a good idea but in effect cause a huge effect on our system performance, lagging out playback and eating gobs of memory.
Whilst needing to find a way of recording twitch streams easily i went on a deep dive rabbit hole adventure finding some bloody good tools in the process that make the task of watching (and recording) twitch streams all that much easier. It's not an automated solution for recording but i do have a way of doing that as well but I'll save that for another post because I've yet to set that up and give it a go - I've simply not the space to experiment with it.
So then, what is the stream link twitch gui? Well it's a universal program that's written in some of the latest frameworks that works across most platforms, it's dead easy to install and uses either streamlink or livestreamer (both command line programs) to grab the twitch streams and use them with vlc or similar programs. I wanted to use it with vlc because vlc allows me to record anything i can basically get into the playlist.
The great thing about streamlink gui is that i get a really sweet almost like TV guide gui experience and it handles firing up the streamlink process without touching the command line (i know some of you love the command line, knock yaself out) but i really like this node.js coded gui - it's got notifications, ability to set resolution i want to watch in and is just generally a nice experience that i have running in my tray bar - best of all, i never need to ever load my browser, it's all handled direct using livestreamer/streamlink.
It works by processing the url of the stream directly and passes it to vlc for playback, the benefits of this is that i rarely have any lag or pauses or latency, it's direct, it's not running inside a laggy performance hogging browser and it plays back in the super memory efficient vlc player - super bad ass. You can even tweak the amount of caching you do for your playback. It's rad, trust me.
Kinda wish that steemit had playback for a number of embeds (including twitch) actually I've never tried it because it's HTML after all so maybe the embed would work here? I've yet to try it, i do know that i can use youtube and embed a live player here and I've got an experiment to give that a go at some point so i can reach out to some of you steemians in realtime.
it’s quite easy to setup but if you have problems drop me a message! :)
