I had been hearing some buzz about The Beyond Burger from the Beyond Meat brand so when I saw it was available in my local grocery store and I had a $1 off coupon I decided to give it a try.
My expectations were not very high. I actually like a lot of plant-based meat substitution products but they are what they are. What they are not is meat. So, when I read the advertising about it being so close in color, texture and taste to a beef burger I was skeptical.
I followed the directions on the back of the packing. Pre-heated the pan and only cooked the 2 patties for 3 minutes on each side. I did use some oil in the pan.
The finished product was orangey in color. It did not look like beef. It was tasty looking but not beefy looking. I served the patty with sautéed mushrooms and onions. The texture of the patty was good, “juicy” and very close to beef. The taste was good, savory, but not beef. I really enjoyed the burger and might buy it again, because it is low carb, plant-based and it was filling. I see it as a good alternative to a beef burger not a replacement.
