This video looks at the real cost of meat. Can we put a value on the life of an animal and if so, what should that value be? How can we include the value of an animal’s life in the price we pay for a meal containing meat? This video looks at the cost of a Big Mac and the additional costs that are placed on the Big Mac by Meatonomics. This video goes a step further than Meatonomics by including the value of the life of the animal slaughtered in the price of the Big Mac.
Value of statistical life for a human has been adopted from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This value has been adjusted for intelligence using the Encephalization Quotient and for age using the natural life expectancy for the each animal. The cost per Big Mac has been calculated by dividing the calculated value of life of a cow by the number of Big Macs that could be made from her. This value has been added to the numbers produced by Meatonomics. According to my calculations, the cost of the Big Mac has increased to about $117.
