The Book of Acts of the Apostles tells us an important moment in which the Christian religion began to definitively separate from Judaism; God, through a spiritual vision, showed the apostle Peter, who was of Jewish origin, that he should not consider anything or anyone impure.
In the book Leviticus, the rules on purity and impurity were established, rules dictated according to the Bible by God to Moses; these rules forced the Jews in the time of Jesus not to do, or perform certain acts, such as avoiding certain foods or performing certain acts of purification.
God informed Peter through a vision that these rules had been left behind and that in the new covenant, the only valid purity was the purity of the heart and the thoughts of the human soul. And this vision occurred when Peter received the message from the Holy Spirit to convert Cornelius and his entire family, who were of pagan origin. God had communicated in simple words to Peter that pagans could be incorporated into the Church without having to accept the legislation of Judaism; this spiritual vision opened the doors to the rapid conversion of the first pagans to the Christian faith. The new faith thus began to become the world's first universal religion.
With this vision, the Holy Spirit definitively confirmed a teaching of Jesus: "What goes into someone's mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them" Matthew 15:11.
With these words, the Book of Acts of the Apostles describes Peter's vision:
"He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds. Then a voice told him, ´Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.´
´Surely not, Lord!´ Peter replied. ´I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.´
The voice spoke to him a second time, ´Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.´
This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven" Acts 10:11-16.
