If you were a kid in the 80s you had some of the best cartoons ever. He-man, Thundercats, Transformers, and Voltron.
Growing up as a small town kid from Tennessee, I had acres of land to roam and play on but Saturday mornings were all about cartoons. As much as I loved all the others, Voltron was always tops.
To this day I get giddy when I hear this opening music...
If you're unaware of the show, it follows the tale of 5 space explorers who end up piloting 5 robot lions that come together to form Voltron: Defender of the universe.
I feel in love with the characters, the setting, the universe and the epic tale.
Anytime we'd go to Blockbuster I'd always want to rent the Voltron movie that basically was the first four episodes that start the series.
Voltron was the source of hours of play for me. I'd build cardboard outlines of the inside of a lion, a lion key, a sword, anything I could to let me be apart of the universe.
I'd sit in the lounge chair, after decking it out to look like the inside of the black lion, and pretend I was Keith and watch/pretend along as we formed Voltron over and over and over....
Here's a video of what I'm talking about (I'm the guy in red)
To this day there is nothing but joy for me when I think back about those times. That innocent kid always comes alive whenever my mind strays there. I love that kid and it always reminds me just how precious life is and how even the simplest of things can end up being tremendously impactful. If our purpose in life is joy, then that 7 year old boy found it in a story long ago and it has stayed with him to this day.
Voltron has been remade a few different times, but none compared to that original 1984 series.....
That is until Netflix picked up the rights and redid it. The new series is a wonderful adaption of the original that has a different take on the original story but stays true to the characters that made the original so endearing. If you haven't checked it out yet I highly recommend you do.
and so do this guy...
Yes, those are Voltron cutouts on that sword...
