Here with two bar magnets side by side (two cylinder magnets but same thing) under a ferrocell you can see that there is repulsion along the diagonal, attraction side ways since magnets oriented in opposite polarity, but repulsion across diameter between like poles.
Ferrocells are an evolution of the ferrofluid concept, a very thin layer of oil with nano-size iron particles, allows you to see magnetic fields with a higher resolution. The repulsion that you can see is along the diagonal, between the like poles, compare the angle to the image at the bottom that shows standard two magnets with like ends facing one another, the angle of the repulsive vector in the two magnets side-by-side is 45° to the angle in the image at the bottom.
Moving the magnets with the like poles facing one another up and down to mirror the magnets side-by-side should reproduce that 45° angle.
